Things are heating up with Syracuse basketball's 2027 recruiting efforts.
Lately, the new Orange staff under first-year head coach Gerry McNamara has scored its first verbal commitment in its 2027 class, while other targets have included the 'Cuse in their list cuts and scheduled visits to the Hill.
A couple of points to keep in mind here as we discuss SU's 2027 recruiting. In terms of how many high school prospects in the 2027 class the Orange would ultimately take, one has to keep in mind the team's current roster for the 2026-27 season and how many current players might return in the next campaign.
Plus, the new 5-for-5 eligibility rules from the NCAA will impact 2027 prospects' decision-making. Recruiting analysts say that high school seniors, especially at the top end, might be waiting longer to announce their verbal commitments to schools than in years past.
Case in point, slightly more than 20 of the top-100 overall players in the industry-generated 247Sports Composite for the 2027 class have revealed their college choices.
The recruiting landscape at the prep level has significantly changed in recent years, given the transfer portal's explosion, direct rev-share paid by schools to their athletes, third-party NIL deals, the trend of more international prospects heading to the collegiate level and even some pros wanting to return to college. The new 5-for-5 rules only add another layer of complexity to this situation.
My point with all the context is that while SU coaches did land a 2027 verbal pledge on Monday evening, don't expect a flood of Orange recruits in this cycle to suddenly commit to the 'Cuse - or other suitors.
In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if more of the higher-ranked 2027 players than usual wait to sign with their school during the regular signing period next April, rather than officially signing during the early period this November.
Still, Syracuse basketball has momentum on the recruiting trail in the 2027 class.
Let's get into some of the latest developments and also what to watch for in the coming weeks and months as it relates to the Orange's 2027 cycle:
First verbal commitment
On Monday night, McNamara and his assistants landed their first 2027 verbal pledge, as three-star wing Jack Donohue from Albany, N.Y., committed to the 'Cuse. McNamara first offered the 6-foot-8, 220-pound Donohue last summer while he was still Siena's head coach. The new Orange staff offered Donohue in June, around the time that he went on an unofficial visit to SU, as Inside the Loud House first reported.
In the upcoming campaign, Donohue will be a senior at The Newman School in Boston. This spring and summer, he played at a high level for the 17U team of the Jersey Shore, N.J.-based NJ ShoreShots in the Under Armour Association ("UAA") league. Donohue is a solid first pick-up, regardless of what some Orange fans are whining about on social media and in chat rooms.
List cuts
Over the past week or two, at least three 2027 prospects who hold a scholarship offer from the 'Cuse have trimmed their list of contenders, with Syracuse basketball making the cut. Four-star point guard J'Lon Lyons has named a top eight; four-star guard Devin Cleveland has dropped a top seven; and four-star wing Carson Crawford has SU in his top five. Look for other Syracuse basketball 2027 recruits to likely unveil their list cuts soon, too.
Visits
Three Orange priority targets in this class have locked in upcoming official visits. They are:
•Five-star wing/forward Ahmed Nur from August 28 to August 30 (first reported by Rivals)
•Four-star power forward Ian Condon from September 1 to September 2 (first reported by Inside the Loud House)
•Lyons from September 11 to September 13 (first reported by national analyst Sam Kayser)
•Crawford is eyeing an official visit to the 'Cuse this fall, Inside the Loud House has reported, while Cleveland is also expected to officially visit all his finalists before making a college decision. Inside the Loud House confirmed on Monday that five-star wing/small forward Moussa Kamissoko is also likely to take an official visit to SU at some point.
Priority recruits
Per a source, here are the priority targets for Syracuse basketball in the 2027 class, although this is subject to change, given how fluid recruiting is:
•Nur, Condon, Lyons, Kamissoko and five-star point guard Nasir Anderson. The Orange staff wants to get all these prospects on the Hill for visits. I'd also keep tabs on Cleveland.
Fall recruiting period
In September, the fall recruiting period begins, and this means that 'Cuse coaches will hit the road to check in on recruiting targets at their high school open gyms. SU coaches will also be able to conduct in-home visits with prospects. These sorts of developments will provide further clarity on what the Orange's 2027 class will ultimately look like.
Other things to watch
As time passes this fall, some 'Cuse targets will cut the Orange from contention. Syracuse basketball coaches could also change up their 2027 strategy by possibly making new offers and/or ramping up their pursuit of players beyond the ones I've mentioned above.
For example, five-star point guard King Gibson, five-star center Lewis Uvwo and four-star power forward Zion Green all hold offers from the Orange. Green unofficially visited SU in late August of last year. These three 2027 prospects don't seem to be priority recruits for the 'Cuse these days, but that could change. This also applies to Crawford, who isn't necessarily a priority target for Syracuse basketball right now, but he has the Orange in his top five and wants to visit.
