J'Lon Lyons, a fast-rising 2027 four-star point guard from the talent-rich DMV, is one of several priority recruiting targets for the new Syracuse basketball staff in the high school senior class.

The 6-foot-3 Lyons is expected to take an official visit to the Orange from September 11 to September 13, Inside the Loud House confirmed in late June. In recent days, word broke that the top-50 national prospect in the 2027 cycle has named a top eight of Syracuse basketball, Butler, Georgetown, Maryland, Tennessee, VCU, Virginia and Washington.

Currently, the 'Cuse leads for Lyons, per the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine ("RPM"). However, as he takes visits and other things transpire, SU's edge in the RPM could change. At this juncture, Inside the Loud House believes that the Orange is in a strong spot for Lyons, but this doesn't mean SU will ultimately prevail for him. Each of his top-eight schools can make a compelling case, which we will outline below.

The former Syracuse basketball staff under then-head coach Adrian Autry first offered a scholarship to Lyons last summer. The new Orange staff, led by first-year head coach Gerry McNamara, has continued to recruit Lyons hard.

Lyons attends the Clinton Grace Christian School in Clinton, Md. As a junior in the 2025-26 season, he resided on the All-Met first team in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area and was the Gatorade player of the year in Maryland after averaging 15.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.4 steals per game for Clinton Grace (22-11 overall).

In the latest AAU season, Lyons was a standout for the D.C.-based Team Takeover in Nike's EYBL league. In recent months, after taking the helm of the 'Cuse program, McNamara and his assistants have been on hand for Lyons numerous times during NCAA-permitted live periods.

Examining the top 8 of Syracuse basketball 2027 4-star priority recruit J'Lon Lyons.

Butler: The Bulldogs offered Lyons on May 15 of this year, according to his Instagram page. Lyons has said in interviews that when picking a school, it's important for him to be able to contribute right away as a freshman. Butler appears to offer that to Lyons.

Georgetown: The Hoyas are a local school for Lyons, and they've prioritized him for a long time, first offering a scholarship in October 2024. He took an unofficial visit to Georgetown last September, and it was his first visit to a college program. Lyons is quite fond of Hoyas head coach Ed Cooley.

Maryland: Another hometown team for Lyons, the Terrapins offered him in September of last year. Per 247Sports, he will take an official visit to Maryland from September 18 to September 20. Lyons says that he hears from UMD head coach Buzz Williams and his staff on a daily basis.

Tennessee: While the Volunteers just offered Lyons in late May of this year, the Tennessee staff has recruited him for a while now. Plus, the Vols play in the loaded Southeastern Conference and have reached two straight Elite Eights in 2025 and 2026 under head coach Rick Barnes.

VCU: The Rams offered Lyons in May 2025, and he took an unofficial visit to VCU last September. Lyons has said that he frequently talks to the Rams' coaching staff.

Virginia: The Cavaliers, under head coach Ryan Odom, went 30–6 overall in the 2025-26 season. They offered Lyons in September 2025. One thing to note here is that Autry, who has terrific recruiting ties to the DMV, is now an assistant at UVA.

Washington: The Huskies, out of the Big Ten Conference, are a newer team in Lyons' recruitment, having offered him on June 15 of this year. He has a strong relationship with Washington assistant DeAndre Hopkins, who moved from Marquette to the Huskies for the 2026-27 campaign.

Syracuse: Lyons was forming a good relationship with Autry and his staff when the Orange offered him in June 2025. 'Cuse assistant coach Ryan Daly, who most recently was an assistant at VCU, has built a relationship with Lyons. McNamara is doing the same. It's also worth noting that Syracuse basketball assistant coach Arinze Onuaku is from the D.C. metro area. Lyons has said that he loves the Orange program, and how SU uses its guards.
