Syracuse Football: QB Kyle McCord's 2024 regular season historic in countless ways
By Neil Adler
The 2024 regular season under first-year head coach Fran Brown and his top-flight staff ended on a supremely high note for Syracuse football.
The Orange, this past Saturday in week 14, mounted its largest comeback in program history to knock off then-No. 6 Miami, 42-38, before a frenetic JMA Wireless Dome crowd. A lot of Syracuse football players, on both offense and defense, were instrumental in this massive triumph for the 'Cuse, and at the top of the list was the team's record-setting senior quarterback, Kyle McCord.
Following the Orange's stunner over the Hurricanes, Syracuse football wrapped up the regular season at 9-3 overall and 5-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. After being projected to finish at No. 12 in the league standings, per the ACC preseason media poll, the 'Cuse ended up in a tie for fourth place.
The Orange, which on Sunday entered both of the major top-25 polls, will go bowling for the third straight year. It remains to be seen which bowl game the 'Cuse will reside in, and whether McCord and other Syracuse football players will participate. Either way, let's have a look at McCord's absolutely, positively remarkable 2024 regular season.
Inside the tremendous senior year of Syracuse football quarterback Kyle McCord.
Per ESPN, in the Orange's 12 regular-season games, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound native of Mount Laurel, N.J., has completed 65.8 percent of his passes for 4,326 yards and 29 touchdowns against 12 interceptions.
The four-star transfer from Ohio State is the first 'Cuse signal-caller to throw for more than 4,000 yards in a campaign. Per SU Athletics and media reports, McCord now owns single-season Orange program records for passing attempts, completions, total passing yards and total touchdowns.
Against Miami, McCord threw for 380 yards and three touchdowns. He has, in 2024, passed for at least 300 yards in 11 games, which is also a 'Cuse record. In 10 encounters this term, McCord threw for at least two touchdowns.
Following week 14, according to the NCAA's Web site, he is No. 1 in the country in total passing yards, passing yards per game and completions per contest. Nationally, McCord is also tied for No. 4 in total passing touchdowns.
Within the ACC, he is No. 1 in total completions, total attempts, total passing yards and passing yards per game. In the conference, he's tied for No. 2 in total passing touchdowns and No. 5 in completion percentage.
Suffice it to say, McCord's lone season on the Hill has proven extraordinary. He said not too long ago that transferring to Syracuse football for the 2024 season "was the best decision I've ever made in my life."
Trust me, Kyle. Orange Nation feels the same way about you.
