The Syracuse basketball staff watched several five-star players in the 2027 and 2028 classes on Friday night amid the live period in grassroots hoops.
According to a post on X from scout/analyst Tobias Bass, who is also a staff editor for The Athletic, the Orange staff was on hand for a game on the Adidas 3SSB circuit between the Compton, Calif.-based Compton Magic and the Spartanburg, S.C.-based Upward Stars in the main 17U division. The Upward Stars prevailed, 77-71.
So who was the 'Cuse watching? Well, there are a couple of excellent prospects playing for these two teams. For the Upward Stars, there is 2027 four-star small forward Josh Leonard, a top-30 national prospect out of the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

For the Compton Magic, there are three top-flight prospects on its 17U roster. They are:
•2028 five-star center Yann Kamagate, a top-five national prospect out of St. Francis High School in La Cañada Flintridge, Calif.
•2027 five-star center Darius Wabbington, a top-15 national prospect out of Sunnyslope High School in Phoenix
•2028 five-star combo guard Josh Lowery, a top-25 national prospect out of the Sierra Canyon School in Chatsworth, Calif.
In Friday evening's contest, Leonard had 22 points, seven rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block. Kamagate tallied 12 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Wabbington had 25 points, 11 rebounds, one assist and one steal. Lowery notched five points, six rebounds and one assist.
Syracuse basketball coaches are out and about this weekend on the AAU circuits.
The Orange isn't likely recruiting Wabbington. He recently disclosed a top six of Arizona, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, North Carolina and Texas. At this juncture, the 'Cuse hasn't offered a scholarship to Leonard, Kamagate or Lowery.
On X, Leonard is followed by Syracuse basketball assistant coach Ben Lee, while Kamagate is followed by 'Cuse assistant Ryan Daly.
In terms of Orange recruiting targets who are competing for 3SSB teams this weekend in Bryan, Texas, during the live period, it's highly likely that the SU staff is in for 2027 five-star big man Ahmed Nur, who holds a 'Cuse scholarship offer and will take an official visit to Syracuse basketball at some point, Inside the Loud House has reported. Nur suits up for the 17U team of the Milwaukee-based Power 5.
Two other prospects are 2028 three-star guard Ka'Shawn Gill of Power 5 (16U division) and 2027 four-star guard Kamari Whyte of the New York City-based New Heights (17U division). Both hold interest from the Orange.
Syracuse basketball coaches have also been watching targets at the Nike EYBL league's session in Las Vegas. As far as other shoe-sponsored circuits, the New Balance P32 is in Chesterfield, Mo., the Puma-sponsored PRO16 is in Richmond, Va.., and the Under Armour Association ("UAA") is in Emerson, Ga.
