The new Syracuse basketball staff, led by first-year head coach Gerry McNamara, is heavily in pursuit of prospects from the nation's No. 1 high school program this past season.

One of the Orange's latest scholarship offers has gone out to 2028 five-star point guard and top-30 overall prospect Liam Mitakaro, he recently disclosed on his social media accounts. The 6-foot-4 Mitakaro hails from Edmonton, which is the capital city of the Canadian province of Alberta.

Mitakaro attends CIA Bella Vista in Phoenix, which is part of the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League Scholastic ("EYBL Scholastic"), a super league of sorts consisting of independent basketball academies and other top-flight prep-school squads.

In 2025-26, CIA Bella Vista went 26-4 overall and won this past April's Chipotle Nationals in Fishers, Ind. That resulted in the Bears being the unanimous No. 1 team around the country at the conclusion of the 2025-26 stanza.

This past season, in EYBL Scholastic competition, Mitakaro averaged 6.50 points, 1.50 rebounds, 2.06 assists and 1.00 steals per game while connecting on 51 percent from the field, 35 percent from beyond the arc and 71 percent from the free-throw line.

Two of Mitakaro's CIA Bella Vista teammates for the upcoming 2026-27 campaign also hold offers from the Orange staff. They are 2028 four-star forward Settimo Yugu, who is also from Canada, and 2027 four-star big man Ahmed Nur.

According to Mitakaro's Instagram page, his full scholarship offer sheet includes other schools such as Oregon, San Francisco, Arizona State, UNLV, California, San Diego, UCLA, West Virginia, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Kansas, Ohio State, Texas, Arkansas and Kentucky. Rivals currently places him as the No. 3 point guard in the 2028 class.

This spring and summer on the AAU circuits, Mitakaro is playing alongside Yugu for the 16U team of UPLAY Canada in Nike's EYBL league. Mitakaro is averaging 14.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.1 steals per game while connecting on 45.8 percent from the field, 27.3 percent from 3-point land and 71.4 percent from the free-throw line.

In late May, after the EYBL's third spring session, the scouting experts at The Circuit named Mitakaro to their All-EYBL first team for that session, as he averaged 13.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 2.3 steals per encounter.
