Jacob Canton, a 2027 four-star point guard who is receiving interest from the Syracuse basketball staff, recently transferred to a big-time prep-school program that was ranked in the top 25 nationally a season ago.

The 6-foot-2 Canton will spend his junior year in the upcoming 2025-26 season at Mt. Zion Prep in Lanham, Md., which is one of the top squads in the talent-rich Washington, D.C., metropolitan region. Canton, in 2024-25, competed for the Rutgers Preparatory School in Somerset, N.J.

A huge congrats to Jacob! In late August of last year, Canton suited up in the Orange's annual Elite Camp. When the 2027 contact period opened on June 15, enabling college coaches to initiate direct communication with prospects in this class, Canton heard from Syracuse basketball, among other programs.

Late last month, Mt. Zion Prep head coach Lafayette Dublin announced on X that his team will participate in The Grind Session, a circuit of elite prep-school hoops programs whose members include juggernauts such as Prolific Prep in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the Dream City Christian School in Glendale, Ariz., Bella Vista Prep in Phoenix and AZ Compass Prep in Chandler, Ariz.

In 2024-25, Mt. Zion Prep had an excellent term, notching triumphs over numerous top-flight foes. In his final top 25 for this past season, ESPN recruiting director Paul Biancardi placed Mt. Zion Prep at No. 24 across the country.

Syracuse basketball is showing an interest in 4-star PG Jacob Canton.

According to recruiting services, Canton's early scholarship offer sheet includes schools such as Penn State, Hampton, Old Dominion, Seton Hall, West Virginia and Radford.

Currently, his highest 2027 national ranking comes courtesy of Rivals.com, at No. 34 overall. At the time of this writing, both the industry-generated 247Sports Composite and the industry-generated On3 Industry Ranking placed Canton in the top 70 nationally and the top 20 at point guard.

In June, national analysts and scouts praised Canton for his performances at various showcases, such as the Nike Elite 100 Camp in St. Louis and the Pangos All-American Camp in Las Vegas.

On the AAU circuit this spring and summer, Canton is competing for the 16U team of the Bronx, N.Y.-based PSA Cardinals in Nike's EYBL league. For the PSA Cardinals, he's played alongside 2027 five-star wing/small forward Moussa Kamissoko, who holds an Orange offer, and 2027 four-star point guard Micah Gordon, who is on the Syracuse basketball staff's radar.

So far, per the EYBL Web site, Canton is averaging 9.2 points, 2.4 assists and 1.6 rebounds per contest while making 46.3 percent from the field, 31.2 percent from beyond the arc and 82.4 percent from the free-throw line.
