Syracuse football among teams standing out to 5-star WR Calvin Russell, No. 5 prospect
By Neil Adler
Syracuse football continues to be mentioned by national analysts as one of the leading contenders for elite 2026 prospect Calvin Russell from Florida, who is a five-star wide receiver and the country's No. 5 overall prospect in this class per 247Sports.
Naturally, Russell's recruiting process could have a way to go, but as it currently stands, it does appear that the Orange staff is heavily in the mix for one of the top players in the rising high school junior class.
It's true that throughout his recruitment, the 6-foot-5, 190-pound Russell has amassed more than 40 offers, but in a recent article, Rivals.com and Yahoo Sports national recruiting director Adam Gorney wrote, "Four programs are standing out most to Russell with Syracuse, Florida State, Georgia and LSU making the biggest impression on him over this offseason."
That's some pretty select company for head coach Fran Brown and his staff to reside in as it pertains to Russell, whom the 'Cuse re-offered a scholarship to on January 20 of this year.
Syracuse football is in hot pursuit of 2026 five-star wide receiver Calvin Russell.
Russell is a standout at Miami Northwestern Senior High School. Gorney also notes in his story that Russell is a Miami Hurricanes legacy, and he "will visit Oregon at the end of July."
In late March of this year, he went on an unofficial visit to the 'Cuse, and I'm hopeful that he will take an official visit to the Hill in the future.
As I noted in another piece not too long ago, 247Sports national analyst Tom Loy recently said in a post on X that Syracuse football was among the suitors doing "a phenomenal job" in its recruitment of Russell.
Understandably, it will prove a tall task for Brown and his top-flight assistants to prevail for Russell, with others recruiting him hard including some heavyweight programs such as Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Oregon and Miami.
That being said, the Orange staff these days is putting a big recruiting emphasis on the Sunshine State, with two of the team's 2026 four-star verbal commits hailing from Florida.
If somehow, someway, the 'Cuse was able to land Russell, that would be a phenomenal recruiting win. His 2026 national rankings are ridiculous (in a good way).
Russell is No. 5 overall per 247Sports. In newly updated 2026 ratings from ESPN, he arrived at No. 18 nationally.
Both the industry-generated 247Sports Composite and the industry-generated On3 Industry Ranking, at the time of this writing, placed Russell in the top 15 across the country in this cycle.
What's more, virtually all of the main recruiting services have him as one of the three best wide receivers nationwide in the 2026 class.
