Syracuse basketball reaches out to point-guard transfer who led his league in assists

Syracuse basketball is among numerous schools that have reached out to Hofstra junior point guard Jaquan Carlos, who is in the transfer portal and hails from New York City.

Per a report from 247Sports national analyst Dushawn London, the 6-foot Carlos has heard from college squads including the Orange, Rhode Island, Georgia Tech, California, Virginia Tech, VCU, Temple, Loyola Marymount and Boston College, among others.

Carlos, who is from Brooklyn, N.Y., put forth a solid 2023-24 season for Hofstra, which is located on New York's Long Island and is a member of the Coastal Athletic Association ("CAA").

This past term, the Pride went 20-13 overall and 12-6 in league play, falling in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament in Washington, D.C.

Syracuse basketball may have an interest in Hofstra junior point guard Jaquan Carlos, who is in the portal.

As a junior, according to ESPN data, Carlos appeared in all 33 games for the Pride. He averaged 35.5 minutes, 10.4 points, 6.3 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 1.6 steals per contest, while connecting on 41.3 percent from the field, 34.4 percent from beyond the arc, and 89.2 percent from the free-throw line.

Carlos' 6.3 assists per game led the CAA, and he was also No. 3 in that league in assist/turnover ratio per affair.

A three-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting cycle, Carlos attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn. Within that class, the industry-generated 247Sports Composite rated him at No. 292 overall, No. 46 at point guard and No. 7 in New York.

While in high school, his offer sheet also included schools such as Connecticut, N.C. State, Wake Forest, East Carolina, DePaul, St. John's, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, Bryant, Cincinnati, Fordham, Iona and Oklahoma State, according to recruiting Web sites.

The current transfer-portal window opened for business on Monday, March 18, and will run for 45 days. To date, at least three players on the Syracuse basketball 2023-24 roster have decided to hit the portal: sophomore guards/wings Justin Taylor and Quadir Copeland, along with junior forward Benny Williams, who was dismissed from the 'Cuse program in early February.

In addition to Carlos, Orange coaches have reached out to at least two other college players who are in the transfer portal this off-season, according to national recruiting analysts. They are Mount St. Mary's senior guard Dakota Leffew and UNC Greensboro senior forward Mikeal Brown-Jones.
