By Neil Adler
Syracuse basketball is one of numerous teams that has reached out to prolific-scoring forward Mikeal Brown-Jones, a senior at UNC Greensboro who is in the transfer portal, according to a media report.
The transfer portal opened up last Monday and will run for 45 days. On3 national analyst/scout Jamie Shaw noted on March 18 that the 6-foot-8, 220-pound Brown-Jones had entered the portal.
More recently, this past Saturday, On3 national reporter Joe Tipton said via his X page that Brown-Jones has heard from many potential suitors, including the Orange, Kansas State, Ole Miss, Auburn, Georgetown, St. John's, Miami, Wisconsin, California, Virginia, Arkansas, Pittsburgh, Iowa, UCLA and Georgia, among others.
Brown-Jones, who hails from the Philadelphia area, has played the past two seasons for UNC Greensboro out of the Southern Conference ("SoCon"). Before that, he suited up for two campaigns at VCU from the Atlantic 10 Conference.
When I wrote this article on Saturday night, in national transfer rankings on the On3 Web site, Brown-Jones was rated four stars and No. 11 overall. He should prove a highly sought-after prospect this off-season.
Syracuse basketball has reached out to UNC Greensboro forward transfer Mikeal Brown-Jones.
UNC Greensboro, in the 2023-24 term, went 21-11 overall and 12-6 in SoCon competition. Brown-Jones was fabulous for the Spartans.
According to ESPN data, he appeared in 28 games during his senior year, averaging 28.4 minutes, 18.9 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists per contest, while connecting on 54.0 percent from the field, 43.1 percent from beyond the arc, and 78.7 percent from the free-throw line.
In early March, Brown-Jones was named to the All-SoCon first team.
As a member of the 2020 recruiting class, Brown-Jones was a three-star prospect who spent his final two seasons at the powerhouse IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. At the end of the 2018-19 stanza, he was a key contributor as IMG sported a 31-1 mark and captured the GEICO Nationals.
Syracuse basketball 2024 commit Donnie Freeman, a five-star power forward, is starring at IMG in 2023-24. In early April, Freeman and IMG will compete in the same season-ending national championship tournament, which is now called the Chipotle Nationals.
So far since the portal has opened, reports have stated Orange sophomore guard/wings Justin Taylor and Quadir Copeland are entering the portal. Junior forward Benny Williams, who was dismissed from the program in early February, is also entering the portal.
Last week, after the portal opened, Tipton reported that Syracuse basketball coaches had reached out to transfer Dakota Leffew, a senior guard at Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference member Mount St. Mary's who averaged nearly 18 points per contest in 2023-24.
