Over the past year or so, I’ve written several columns where I’ve adamantly stated that Syracuse basketball 2024 commit Elijah Moore, a four-star shooting guard from New York City, is vastly underrated in the senior class.
The 6-foot-5 Moore verbally committed to the Orange in late January of 2023 over other finalists Alabama, Arkansas, Miami and Oklahoma State. Last November, he officially signed with the ‘Cuse.
Moore put forth a strong junior season at his previous New York City high school. He had a fabulous AAU circuit last spring and summer. And so far in his senior year, suiting up in the Atlanta-based professional league Overtime Elite, Moore is shining once again.
Yet some recruiting services continue to under-rank him – significantly. These ratings are subjective, and I acknowledge I’m a homer when it comes to Syracuse basketball.
But based on what he’s done in high school and in grassroots basketball, for any recruiting Web site to place Moore outside the top 100 overall in the 2024 cycle is something I’ll never fully understand.
However, Syracuse basketball signee Elijah Moore is an elite shooting guard.
In late January, one of the main recruiting services, 247Sports, published its latest update of 2024 national rankings.
Currently, 247Sports has Moore at No. 53 nationwide, No. 9 at shooting guard and No. 4 in New York within the senior class.
Putting my frustration over some of his national ratings to the side for a second, let’s go over this again. Elijah Moore is deemed one of the 10 best shooting guards, around the entire country, in the 2024 cycle.
That, to me, speaks volumes. Orange Nation is fortunate to have Moore within its two-member senior class, which is small in size, but stellar in quality.
To that end, I recently noted that the industry-generated On3 Industry Ranking has the ‘Cuse 2024 class inside the top 20 nationally.
The other member of this Syracuse basketball recruiting cycle is five-star Donnie Freeman from Washington, D.C., who is rated the No. 1 power forward in the 2024 class, per On3.
So to recap, Orange coaches in their senior cycle possess a top-10 shooting guard and the No. 1 power forward. That’s pretty, pretty good.
Moore is competing as a senior during the 2032-24 campaign for the Our Saviour Lutheran School in the Bronx, N.Y., which operates as JellyFam in Overtime Elite competition.
When I penned this piece, Moore resided in the top 10 in points per game during Overtime Elite play. Considering how many top-flight prospects suit up in this professional league, that’s a tremendous statistic.
According to the Overtime Elite Web site, at the time of this writing, Moore was averaging 16.5 points, 2.7 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.0 steals per contest, while connecting on 42.1 percent from the field, 34.6 percent from beyond the arc and 75.0 percent from the free-throw line.
Per a post on X from Our Saviour Lutheran, the team will hold its senior night on Monday, Feb. 19, in a game that begins at 7 pm versus Bridgeport Prep from Bridgeport, Conn.
Orange Nation congratulates the Our Saviour Lutheran seniors, especially Elijah Moore. I can’t wait to see him don a ‘Cuse uniform next season.
