The chatter is that 2027 four-star center Theo Edema, a Syracuse basketball recruit, could make a college decision sooner rather than later, according to analysts.

The 7-foot Edema, who took an official visit to the Orange in September, appears to be considering suitors such as Auburn, Maryland, Creighton, Alabama, the 'Cuse and Providence, analysts say.

Jeff Ermann of 247Sports, on December 9, logged a prediction in Maryland's direction for Edema. When I wrote this article on Wednesday, the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine had Syracuse basketball with a slight lead for Edema, although that is certainly subject to change as his recruiting process seems to be coming down the home stretch.

Edema, within the 2027 class, is No. 42 overall, No. 6 at center and No. 1 in Massachusetts, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. He has said that his September official visit to the Hill went quite well. Also in September, amid the fall recruiting period, the Orange coaching staff was in for Edema at the Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Mass.

Syracuse basketball target Theo Edema could make his commitment announcement soon.

One thing to monitor with Edema - and I've noted this in several columns in recent months - is that he might be a candidate to re-classify from 2027 into the 2026 cycle. A handful of 2027 prospects who hold Orange scholarship offers, including Edema, might re-class into 2026.

Syracuse basketball coaches offered a scholarship to Edema in late June of this year. I'm aware of at least 15 players in the 2027 cycle who, to date, have picked up a 'Cuse offer.

Edema, in the 2024-25 season, secured an honorable mention nod for the All-New England Basketball League ("NEBL") teams. On the AAU circuits, he has suited up for the Boston-based Team New England Basketball Club. In the 2025-26 term, Edema is poised for a big campaign at Cushing.

The Orange is still on the hunt for its first commitment at the high school level in both the 2026 and 2027 classes. Five-star shooting guard Jordan Smith Jr. is a top target for the 'Cuse in 2026, while Syracuse basketball is focused on several recruits in the 2027 cycle.
