Amid flurry of pledges, Syracuse football's 2027 cycle could push for SU's top class ever

Syracuse football has put together a 2027 class that's solid so far, and it could make history on the Hill.

Syracuse football's 2027 class could - I repeat, could - make a run at the highest-ranked prep cycle ever for the Orange in the modern recruiting services era.

Okay. Hear me out. It's a long way until the early signing period for rising high school seniors commences this December. I get that. We're likely to see flips (both ways), more pledges and more de-commitments in the coming weeks and months surrounding 2027 prospects who are entering their senior seasons in high school.

So, along this anticipated slightly bumpy ride over the summer and into the fall, 'Cuse coaches are positioning their 2027 class to be among the best of all-time for Syracuse football, provided that the Orange lands more four-star players (and a five-star commit, or two, would also greatly help).

Naturally, recruiting rankings aren't everything, and they don't matter much at all once high school prospects get to the Hill and commence competing at the collegiate level. Still, head coach Fran Brown and his staff deserve credit for what they've done to date with their 2027 cycle.

Things are heating up for Syracuse football on the recruiting trail.

Granted, this past weekend, the Orange saw a 2027 three-star tight end flip his verbal commitment from the 'Cuse to Southeastern Conference powerhouse Alabama. Flips happen. However, since June 1, Syracuse football has scored six verbal pledges.

They are:
•Three-star offensive tackle Botond Varga
•Four-star wide receiver Chanin Harris
•Three-star edge Braylon Otis
•Three-star offensive lineman Nico Ramos
•Three-star defensive back Jamel Griffin
•Three-star defensive lineman Edan Richardson

In total, the Orange has secured 18 verbal commitments in its 2027 class. The majority of its pledges are three-star prospects, although both running back Xavier Bala and Harris are rated four stars via ESPN.

Let me be clear. Unless the SU staff picks up pledges from a handful of four-star prospects, and likely a five-star player or two, it's likely not going to see its 2027 cycle end up as the highest-ranked ever on the Hill. Plus, how other teams around the country fare with their 2027 classes will impact where SU's cycle resides.

The two highest-rated Syracuse football classes dating back to the early 2000s, when recruiting services began publishing more comprehensive rankings and scouting evaluations on the Internet, are 2026 and 2024. Here is how they stack up to 2027, at least for the time being:

2027
Industry-generated 247Sports Composite: No. 30 overall
Industry-generated Rivals Industry Ranking: No. 36 overall

2026
Industry-generated 247Sports Composite: No. 35 overall
Industry-generated Rivals Industry Ranking: No. 33 overall

2024
Industry-generated 247Sports Composite: No. 35 overall
Industry-generated Rivals Industry Ranking: No. 37 overall

As you can see, right now, 2027 is tracking to potentially overtake those two other cycles as best ever in Syracuse football's history. But more flips away from SU, de-commitments or missing out on key four-star and five-star targets could transpire for the Orange, so I don't want to overstate anything here.

On the flip side (pun intended), if 'Cuse coaches are able to snag a few big-time flips of their own, or land verbal commitments from four-star prospects who are expected to officially visit later this summer (or have already), then who knows? I never count out Brown in the recruiting arena. The team, though, needs a bounce-back season after last year's disaster, that's for sure.

Certainly, there will be the financial components amid this new era of college sports, dominated by roster budgets, rev-share and third-party NIL considerations. SU appears to be on a relatively solid footing as it pertains to money, as far as I can tell, and the recently revamped organization One Orange Alliance will absolutely help out on the NIL front.

All this should make for an exciting (nerve-racking?) late spring, summer and fall for 'Cuse fans as Syracuse football coaches continue to press hard for their top 2027 targets, with history potentially on the line.
