Nothing is ever a guarantee in the fickle recruiting business until a high-school prospect commits – and sets foot on his new team’s campus – but it appears that Syracuse basketball could be out of the running for 2022 four-star wing Ty Rodgers.
Media reports recently unveiled that the 6-foot-7 Rodgers has scheduled official visits in June with Michigan, Connecticut and Purdue. I thought that the Orange not being included for a visit here was a bad sign.
Another dagger has come out in the form of a tweet from Tipton Edits, in which Rodgers says that the six squads recruiting him the hardest are Michigan, Michigan State, Connecticut, Houston, Rhode Island and Purdue.
Again, this doesn’t look so good for the ‘Cuse. Until Rodgers comes out with a list of finalists that doesn’t include Syracuse basketball, I guess you could argue that the Orange has a chance, albeit a small one.
Then again, perhaps at present ‘Cuse coaches have stopped showing interest in Rodgers, or vice versa. I’ve opined about the fact that fellow 2022 four-star wing Kamari Lands has verbally committed to the Orange.
Additionally, reports have suggested that another 2022 four-star wing, Justin Taylor, is one of the top targets for Syracuse basketball coaches in this cycle, if not the top one.
Since these three high-school players all overlap at the shooting-guard and small-forward positions, it’s understandable if Rodgers has moved on. I wish him well.
Syracuse basketball could be out of contention for 2022 four-star wing Ty Rodgers.
Rodgers is a junior at Grand Blanc Community High School in Grand Blanc, Mich. Earlier this spring, he helped guide his high school to a state championship and was named the AP Division 1 Player of the Year in Michigan.
Currently, ESPN has Rodgers at No. 35 overall within the 2022 cycle, while he checks in at No. 49 nationally via the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.
I have really hoped that the ‘Cuse could pick up Rodgers. So have a lot of other Orange fans. Former Syracuse basketball star Eric Devendorf recently had some fun in a tweet to Rodgers.
UConn is relatively new to the mix as it pertains to Rodgers, but it sounds like the Huskies are in solid shape. I’ve thought for a while now that Rodgers would likely end up with a Big Ten Conference team, given where he plays high-school ball.
Analysts and recruiting insiders have spoken to Michigan perhaps being the favorite to win out for Rodgers. Houston is also a terrific program, having beaten the Orange this past March in the Sweet 16 on the way to the 2021 Final Four.
It’s a bummer if Syracuse basketball is out of the equation for Rodgers. But Lands is a top-25 prospect in the 2022 class, and if the ‘Cuse could get Taylor, that would prove huge.
