Syracuse Basketball: Not feeling great about 4-star wing Ty Rodgers to SU

Syracuse basketball target Ty Rodgers, a 2022 four-star player, is one of the top wings in this cycle. He has spoken highly of the Orange program numerous times, and several media reports have indicated that head coach Jim Boeheim regularly communicates with Rodgers.

However, given that the ‘Cuse recently picked up a verbal commitment from fellow 2022 four-star wing Kamari Lands, some Orange fans in chat rooms have prognosticated that Rodgers isn’t likely to choose the ‘Cuse because of the Lands development.

That being said, the 6-foot-8 Lands, a junior at Prolific Prep in Napa Valley, Calif., can reportedly suit up at small forward, shooting guard and point guard.

So while the 6-foot-7 Rodgers is also characterized as a small forward on recruiting Web sites, perhaps this positional overlap isn’t a deal-breaker for him as it pertains to Syracuse basketball.

But the other thing to consider here is that within the 2022 class, Orange coaches have also reportedly made four-star wing Justin Taylor a high-priority prospect.

The 6-foot-6 Taylor, a junior who attends the St. Anne’s-Belfield School in Charlottesville, Va., is scheduled to make an official visit to Central New York next month. I imagine that Taylor can suit up at either shooting guard or small forward.

Syracuse basketball could be on the outside looking in with four-star Ty Rodgers.

Rodgers is a junior at Grand Blanc Community High School in Grand Blanc, Mich. Earlier this spring, he helped guide his high school to a state championship and was named the AP Division 1 Player of the Year in Michigan.

According to recruiting guru Jake Weingarten, the founder of Stockrisers.com, Rodgers has set up official visits in June with Michigan, Connecticut and Purdue.

Former Big East Conference rival UConn only recently offered a scholarship to Rodgers. Given where he plays high-school ball, a lot of ‘Cuse fans believe that he will end up at a Big Ten Conference school.

While I haven’t seen any analyst predictions for Rodgers to date, I have read multiple articles and comments from recruiting insiders that speak to Michigan prioritizing Rodgers in this cycle.

The Wolverines just wrapped up a fantastic 2020-21 campaign, and Michigan is crushing things on the recruiting trail of late. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Rodgers picks the Wolverines.

He has a range of high-major offers, from other teams such as Minnesota, Michigan State, Ohio State, Maryland, Houston, Marquette, Missouri, Rhode Island, Florida State, Louisville, Vanderbilt and Temple.

The relatively new Connecticut offer is intriguing. The Huskies have gotten into the mix recently with numerous 2022 prospects who also have offers from Syracuse basketball.

I really like Rodgers. He’s talented, works hard and is humble. The Lands commitment, and the Orange prioritizing Taylor, could play a role in Rodgers heading elsewhere.

You never know with this recruiting stuff, although if Rodgers doesn’t end up taking a visit to the ‘Cuse, that’s not an encouraging sign.
