Former Syracuse football quarterback Eric Dungey can now re-join the NFL with the XFL season over due to the coronavirus outbreak.

It’s been a wild 2020 and we’re only three months into the year.

Due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, several major sports entities have either canceled or postponed their seasons this week and that included the XFL.

In an official statement from the XFL, they announced that its inaugural season would come to an end:

"“Currently, the XFL will not be playings its regular-season games. However, all players will be paid their base pay and benefits for the 2020 regular season. All XFL ticket holders will be issued refunds or credit towards future games.”"

The football entity enjoyed a rebirth in 2020 after a 19-year hiatus. Although despite the fact that they had to call their season early due to unforeseen circumstances the XFL still plans on “playing a full season in 2021 and future years.”

Unlike the Alliance of American Football last year, the XFL is experiencing zero financial issues and enjoyed some success on and off the gridiron.

But since the 2020 season is over there are hundreds of players that are now left unemployed. The good news is the XFL has already advised its players that they’re allowed to sign immediately with the NFL or any other league as soon as their exit physicals are completed.

That, of course, includes the wide array of Syracuse football alum that were littered throughout the XFL including but not limited too: Shamarko Thomas, Jay Bromley, Jordan Martin, Andrew Tiller, and of course Eric Dungey.

Dungey in-particular could’ve thrived in the XFL if given a chance, unfortunately, he wasn’t provided that opportunity. The Dallas Renegades added him to the roster thanks to some former Syracuse football connections in the front office (Daryl ‘Moose’ Johnston and Dave Boller).

Sadly he was buried on the depth chart behind Landry Jones (one of the faces of the XFL) and some Instagram model named Philip Nelson. Even when Jones was injured, the Renegades still went to Nelson over Dungey.

Despite Philip putting up mediocre numbers, the team stuck by his side. Now with the XFL season over, Eric Dungey has a second lease on life to go chase his NFL dreams. Speaking of the pros, Dungey has spent time in the NFL with the NY Giants and the Cleveland Browns respectively.

It won’t be easy for Dungey, especially considering the number of viable quarterbacks that’ll be available during the free agency period and the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft. But Eric has faced long odds before and has overcome them.

Hopefully, we can see Dungey back in the NFL soon along with several of his former Syracuse football alum teammates. If not he can still return to the XFL for the 2021 season next year.
