In the past some players knew that participating might lower their stock, while other have played to improve their stock. If Lydon gets a guarantee from a team that he’ll be a pick in the lottery or among the first 20 picks, he may not show for the combine. However, if he thinks, he needs to improve his stock, the combine is a good way to do that.
The NBA Draft combine is set for May 9th through the 14th. According to a tweet by Jonathan Givony of Draft Express, he will not be forced to play, just do the usual physical and interviews and such:
The one notable Syracuse name absent, as of the moment is three point single-season record holder Andrew White. He has shown up in a few mocks now near the end of the draft but unfortunately that is not not enough for an invite just yet. Maybe, he still will, we’ll have to wait and see.
Personally, I think White would use the opportunity well if give the chance. I think he could prove his worth as a three point specialist like he was at Syracuse to pro scouts. Lydon though I think will skip playing, and just do physicals and interviews because he does not want to get an injury or lower his late-first round draft stock. I think that would be wise, even though i’d love to see him play in the combine.
These players have to do what’s best for them and we got to respect that. We may think Lydon left to early, but there’s no going back now that he signed with an agent. So let’s root for him to succeed and do well in the NBA.
As for White, I expect he won’t get an invite at all to the combine, but that he’ll sneak into the second round of the NBA Draft on June 22nd. I wish both the best of luck as they seek an opportunity in the NBA. As we know, only the best make it into the NBA, so they’ll have to earn their spots. I’m sure they wouldn’t have it any other way.
