Syracuse basketball senior Garwey Dual, the Orange's likely starting point guard at the onset of the 2026-27 season, is "back full go at practice," first-year head coach Gerry McNamara said this week during the ACC Tipoff event in Charlotte, N.C.
The 6-foot-5, 200-pound Dual, a transfer from McNeese State, dislocated his collarbone during a practice session this past July. Last month, Dual was participating in non-contact drills but had not been fully cleared for contact work, a team spokesperson told Inside the Loud House at the time.
McNamara says that Dual has been a full participant in the team's preseason practices for the last week. Naturally, that's an encouraging sign. "He looked terrific this past week," McNamara says. "He had made so many offensive strides before his injury. And he has come back and seems to be still on that same path."
Dual, who has a 7-foot wingspan, is known for his defensive prowess and his keen ability to facilitate for his teammates while limiting his turnovers. A season ago, at McNeese State, he was on the Southland Conference's All-Defensive team.
As a junior, he averaged 8.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.6 steals per contest while connecting on 45.6 percent from the field, 31.6 percent from 3-point range and 76.4 percent from the free-throw line.
Gerry McNamara has injury updates on other Syracuse basketball players.
McNamara, at the ACC Tipoff, noted some minor injuries for three other players on the Orange's 2026-27 roster. Those players are junior guard Aiden Tobiason, freshman wing Mark Morano Mahmutovic and senior big man Tasman Goodrick.
Per Syracuse.com: "Tobiason had to rest a tender hamstring for a couple of weeks in late August/early September. Goodrick took a couple days off to rest his back. Morano also had a hamstring that needed a little time off."
Despite those minor injuries, McNamara says everyone has been fully back at preseason practices this week, adding, "We’re good to go."
The 'Cuse 2026-27 roster is filled with a lot of depth and positional versatility, although it would be ideal if all the team's players are healthy as the upcoming campaign inches closer. Syracuse basketball's first of three exhibitions is against UConn on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn.
The Orange officially opens its 2026-27 season when SU hosts non-conference foe New Haven on Monday, Nov. 2, at the JMA Wireless Dome. Syracuse basketball is eyeing a return to the annual NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2021.
