Syracuse basketball senior point guard Garwey Dual, who dislocated his collarbone during a practice session this past July, has not been fully cleared and is participating in non-contact drills, a team spokesperson confirmed to Inside the Loud House on Tuesday morning.
Syracuse.com first reported this on Monday. Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports also noted in a post on X last week that the 6-foot-5, 200-pound Dual had not yet been fully cleared for contact work. The Orange and its peers around the country are beginning their official preseason practices this week ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
I asked the SU hoops spokesperson if there is any timetable for when Dual might get fully cleared. The spokesperson declined to comment specifically on that but added that Dual's injury is not expected to cause him to miss any regular-season games, which is great to hear.
Dual, a Houston native, is thought to be the Orange's starting point guard in 2026-27, the first season with Gerry McNamara serving as the team's head coach. Prior to joining the 'Cuse, Dual most recently was at McNeese State, and he also played for Seton Hall and Providence before that.
Who else could play the point guard spot for Syracuse basketball?
While it seems that Dual, a four-star transfer this past offseason, should be good to go for the 2026-27 regular season, we'll see if he can play in any of the Orange's three exhibitions, the first one being against UConn on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. SU's first regular-season game is against New Haven on Monday, Nov. 2, at the JMA Wireless Dome.
If, for any reason, Dual isn't able to play in a game (or games), who is likely to be the 'Cuse point guard? Certainly, McNamara could look to true freshman Ryan Moesch, the 2026 four-star prospect and Central New York native.
While Moesch wasn't super highly ranked in his high school class, he's a gritty, tough and talented player. Don't take my word for it, though: The new head coach at the powerhouse IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., Jackson Johnson, recently had some highly positive things to say about Moesch in a broad-ranging interview with Inside the Loud House.
Besides Moesch, two other Syracuse basketball guards/wings who could play some minutes at the one are junior Aiden Tobiason and junior Gavin Doty. The Orange's 2026-27 roster has a ton of positional versatility on both ends of the floor, which is a positive thing in case a player, such as Dual, can't go in a particular game.
