Syracuse basketball was expected to begin preseason practices as early as Monday, and senior point guard Garwey Dual, who dislocated his collarbone during a practice session this past July, is participating in non-contact drills, per first-year head coach Gerry McNamara.
McNamara told Syracuse.com that the 6-foot-5, 200-pound Dual, who hails from Houston and is thought to likely be SU's starting point guard in the upcoming 2026-27 campaign, is "trending towards contact," while adding that his "conditioning is excellent."

Transfer from McNeese who averaged 8.4 PPG and 4.4 APG last season.
That's encouraging. Dual, a transfer from McNeese State who has also played in the past for Seton Hall and Providence, is known for his strong defensive instincts, court vision and facilitating for his teammates. He was a top-40 national prospect in the 2023 high school recruiting class, and On3 listed Dual as a four-star transfer this offseason.
Inside the Loud House sent a text message to a Syracuse basketball spokesperson earlier on Monday, inquiring about Dual. That text message has yet to be returned.

Regarding whether Dual would play in the Orange's first exhibition, against UConn on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., McNamara replied, "Depends on how he progresses over the next few weeks."
The 'Cuse plays a total of three exhibitions before its 2026 regular-season opener arrives against New Haven on Monday, Nov. 2, at the JMA Wireless Dome.
With Dual out for the past two months or so, during drills, freshman point guard Ryan Moesch has worked opposite SU guards such as junior Aiden Tobiason, junior Gavin Doty and freshman Mark Morano, who can also suit up at small forward out on the wing.
An area of potential concern, at least among Syracuse basketball fanatics on social media and in chat rooms, is the backup point guard situation for the Orange, should Dual be out for any extended period of time.
Moesch is a college newbie, while the other guards aren't true point guards, so it's probably not a bad thing, long-term, to have other guards like Tobiason and Doty get some practice reps at PG when all is said and done.
Dual, who has a 7-foot wingspan, was named to the Southland Conference's All-Defensive team in 2025-26 as a junior at McNeese State. He averaged 8.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.6 steals per contest while connecting on 45.6 percent from the field, 31.6 percent from 3-point range and 76.4 percent from the free-throw line.
