Freshman wide receiver Calvin Russell III, Syracuse football's highest-rated commit in more than 20 years, has suffered a lower-leg injury, according to On3's Pete Nakos.

SU head coach Fran Brown said in a statement on Tuesday that the 6-foot-5, 190-pound Russell, who also joined Syracuse basketball this past January when he enrolled early at the 'Cuse, was expected to miss an indefinite period of time due to an injury that he suffered during Orange football's spring practices.

But Brown didn't provide further details about Russell's injury. Nakos, in his post on X, noted that Russell's injury is a lower-leg one, adding "a return for late in the 2026 season has not been ruled out yet."

This would seem to suggest that Russell is expected to miss a substantial portion of the upcoming campaign, if not the entire 2026 stanza. My heart breaks for Calvin, and if he is unavailable to play for much or all of the 2026 season, that's a huge blow to the Orange.

Syracuse football, though, does have a sizable wide receivers room for the upcoming term.

Last July, Russell verbally committed to Syracuse football over other finalists Florida State, Michigan and Oregon. At that time, I reported that as part of his pledge to SU football, Russell would also suit up for Syracuse basketball, at least during his freshman season. He officially signed with the Orange last December.

Whether Russell will play for 'Cuse hoops in the future remains to be seen, given his current injury and also that Syracuse basketball has a new head coach, Gerry McNamara, who last week replaced Adrian Autry at the program's helm.

As a prep prospect, Russell was a two-sport standout at Miami Northwestern Senior High School. He won a state title in football at Miami Northwestern during his junior season. Within the 2026 class, 247Sports rated Russell as five stars, No. 31 nationally, No. 3 at wide receiver and No. 3 in Florida.

Other wide receivers on Syracuse football's 2026 roster include Umari Hatcher, Darius Johnson, Darien Williams, Tyshawn Russell, Cole Weaver, Matthew Outten, Zamondre Merriweather, Amare' Gough, Elijah Moore, Julian McFadden and Terrell Wilfong.
