Ugh. I haven't written about Syracuse football in a smidge, because so much has been going on with the men's and women's basketball programs of late. And this isn't the first piece I wanted to author getting back into some Orange football coverage.

Freshman wide receiver Calvin Russell III, Syracuse football's highest-ranked signee in more than two decades, is expected to miss an indefinite period of time due to an injury that he suffered amid SU's spring practices, 'Cuse head coach Fran Brown said in a statement on Tuesday.

Orange Nation sends positive vibes to Calvin and wishes him a speedy recovery. Brown added: "I’m confident Calvin will return stronger because of our culture, commitment to our players and the relationship Calvin, his family and I have. Calvin, best believe Orange Nation’s got your back."

Syracuse football didn't provide specifics about Russell's injury. It's not clear from Tuesday's statement whether the 6-foot-5, 190-pound will be ready to go when the 'Cuse 2026 season gets going later this year.

Syracuse football star freshman WR Calvin Russell is out indefinitely.

Russell, a standout at Miami Northwestern Senior High School, came to the Hill as a five-star, top-35 national prospect in the 2026 cycle, per 247Sports. Multiple recruiting Web sites rate him as a top-five wide receiver within his class.

In January, Russell enrolled at SU and competed for Syracuse basketball. He's a two-sport star and was an excellent wing in high school for Miami Northwestern. I first reported last summer that Russell would join 'Cuse hoops in addition to Syracuse football, where Russell was expected to be a significant contributor as a freshman.

In the 2025-26 season for Syracuse basketball, which went 15-17 overall and named alum Gerry McNamara as its new head coach last week, Russell saw action in one game. He played two minutes, scored three points and grabbed one rebound.

While Syracuse football has a relatively large wide receivers room for the upcoming campaign, it also lost several key wideouts from last year's team to graduation and the transfer portal. Syracuse.com noted that fellow freshman wide receiver Amare Gough injured a shoulder last week, while sophomore Darien Williams, a local product, also suffered some sort of injury last week.

The Orange coaching staff did add talented wide receivers of their own in the portal, although the team's 2026 prospects will definitely improve if Russell is available. Redshirt junior quarterback Steve Angeli, who was injured for much of the 2025 stanza, should be good to go for 2026, reports have said.
