Syracuse football’s 2026 week-10 opponent: Get to know the Clemson Tigers

No Syracuse football season would be complete without a game against the Clemson Tigers. In past years, the Atlantic Coast Conference has enjoyed pairing up the Orange and Tigers early in the season. However, we have to wait until November to see this matchup. By that point in the 2026 season, the Orange might be in need of a win to keep its bowl hopes alive, while the Tigers could be playing for something bigger, making this a critical game for both sides. While there is definitely some familiarity between these two programs, let’s take a look at what the Tigers will look like in 2026.

Clemson head coach: Dabo Swinney

Most Syracuse fans should be familiar with Swinney, who is the longest-tenured ACC coach. He walked on at Alabama and then immediately began his coaching career with the Crimson Tide. Swinney eventually took an assistant job at Clemson in 2003, becoming interim head coach in 2008 and getting the full-time job in 2009. Since then, the Tigers have been a national power, capturing nine ACC titles and two national championships. Including his stint as the interim, Swinney is 187-53 at Clemson and undoubtedly one of the best coaches in college football.

Last meeting with Syracuse: Syracuse 34, Clemson 21 (2025)

This was a monumental game for the Orange in 2025 for multiple reasons. Fran Brown came out of the gate uber aggressive, using an onside kick to steal an extra possession. Behind two impressive touchdown catches by Justus Ross-Simmons and Darrell Gill, the Orange led 24-7 at halftime. Of course, Steve Angeli also suffered his season-ending injury in the game, completely changing the trajectory of Syracuse’s season. Nevertheless, Rickie Collins and the defense did enough to get the Orange over the line, securing a 34-21 win in Death Valley.

Series history

Last year’s win was Syracuse’s first victory at Clemson and just the third overall win against the Tigers in 13 all-time meetings. Donovan McNabb and company crushed the Tigers in the Gator Bowl on New Year’s Day in 1996. In 2013, Syracuse joined the ACC, playing Clemson annually since then outside of 2024. The Orange’s only other win came in 2017 when Eric Dungey led a 27-24 victory over No. 2 Clemson. Despite Clemson’s 10-3 all-time advantage, Syracuse has managed to keep things interesting, with five of the Orange’s 10 losses to the Tigers coming by 10 points or less, creating some semblance of a rivalry between the two. Of course, Fran Brown and the Orange did Clemson a solid in 2024, beating Miami to put the Tigers in the ACC Championship Game, which ultimately got them to the College Football Playoff.

Clemson’s 2025 season

The 2025 campaign was not a typical Clemson season. The Tigers lost to LSU, Georgia Tech, and Syracuse during the first month of the season. There were also unusual home losses to both SMU and Duke in the middle of the season. On the bright side, the Tigers closed the season with four straight wins, including road wins over Louisville and South Carolina. However, the Tigers lost the Pinstripe Bowl to Penn State, leaving them with a 7-6 record, the program’s worst season since Swinney’s second full season in charge.

Clemson’s key returning players

Wide receiver should be one of Clemson’s biggest strengths in 2026. The Tigers bring back T.J. Moore, who led the team with 837 receiving yards last season, as well as Bryant Wesco, who had 537 yards and a team-high six receiving touchdowns. Starting tight end Christian Bentancur is also back and could develop into one of the best tight ends in the ACC. Plus, Gideon Davidson, the primary backup to Adam Randall last season, returns and is poised to step into the starting running back spot.

Defensively, there are only a few returning starters. One of them is Will Heldt, who led the team with 7.5 sacks last season and is poised for a big senior season. Playing the other defensive end spot opposite Heldt will be Jaheim Lawson, who has plenty of experience with 4.5 career sacks. The other key player returning to the Tigers is linebacker Sammy Brown, who had 106 tackles and five sacks in 2025. He will be a difference-maker and one of the best in the ACC at his position. Cornerback Ashton Hampton is also a critical piece for the Tigers, as he’ll be the best player in a revamped secondary.

Clemson’s notable additions

Swinney has been historically hesitant to rely too much on the transfer portal. But he’s needed to add some pieces to the defense this year, especially in the secondary. Penn State transfer Elliott Washington will step in as a starting cornerback right away. Meanwhile, Southern Miss transfer Corey Myrick and Old Dominion transfer Jerome Carter project as the starting safeties after excelling in smaller conferences last year. The Tigers have also used the portal to add depth to their defensive line, most notably former Colorado edge rusher London Merritt.

Naturally, the Tigers also have some blue-chip prospects they expect to contribute right away. Wide receiver Naeem Burroughs could step into the starting lineup as a true freshman. Fellow true freshmen Connor Salmin and Gordon Sellars could also crack the two-deep. Finally, SMU transfer Chris Johnson will likely pair with Davidson at running back to give the Clemson backfield a two-headed monster.

Clemson’s season outlook

The Tigers will have plenty of talent defensively and at the offensive skill positions this season. However, Clemson’s season likely hinges on an offensive line that is replacing three starters, and the play of new quarterback Christopher Vizzina. There is just one upperclassman projected to start on the offensive line, so it’ll be interesting to see how that unit develops. As for Vizzina, he had all the necessary credentials coming out of high school, but has spent three years sitting behind Cade Klubnik. To his credit, he played well in last year’s loss to SMU when he started for an injured Klubnik. If Vizzina is ready and the offensive line holds up, the Tigers should be able to put last season behind them.

Of course, the Tigers won’t be able to ease in their new starting quarterback, as they open the season with a road trip to LSU. There is also a late-September trip to Cal and a home showdown with Miami in early October to worry about. Late in the season, the Tigers have tricky road trips to Florida State, Syracuse, and Duke, as well as home rivalry games with Georgia Tech and South Carolina. The schedule is by no means easy, although Clemson has the talent for 10-plus wins if everything comes together.

When and where does Clemson play Syracuse in 2026?

Syracuse will host Clemson on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the JMA Wireless Dome. A time for the game hasn’t been set.

Prediction: Syracuse 31, Clemson 27

The Tigers are always on upset alert when they come to the Dome. This game is sandwiched in between a trip to Tallahassee and a rivalry game with Georgia Tech, so Clemson could be overlooking the Orange just a little. Clemson’s young offensive line could have problems if the Dome is rocking, setting up Steve Angeli to out-duel Vizzina. After last year’s historic win in Death Valley, Brown and the Orange follow it up by knocking off the Tigers for a second straight season.
