On Saturday, January 18, Syracuse football player KingJoseph Edwards held his second annual community event at STEAM at Dr. King Elementary on the south side of Syracuse. KingJoseph became a fan favorite when committing to Syracuse when he stated that one of his purposes when he attended SU would be to reach out and do work in the community.
Partnering with Steam at Dr King Elementrary, Lekia Tech LLC, Blueprint 15, Syracuse Community Health, SU Student Engagement Group, Light The Yard, and with donations from Hueber Breuer Construction, they put together bags of essential hygiene items for those in the community who need them. They also provided music from DJ Flagg, food and drinks and some coloring areas to keep the little kids occupied.
The event was covered by CNYCentral and Spectrum News, and King took the time to speak with them and every person in attendance and shared his appreciation for those who attended. I even took my son and drove about an hour to the event to show our support for him and the community.
Syracuse football freshman edge KingJoseph Edwards is doing wonderful things in the community.
For a lot of people, the city of Syracuse is often unfairly judged for the crime you see reported or the struggles of many living in poverty. Many will trash the city as a whole just to fill a narrative that often ignores the people there who aren't hurting others or committing crimes. What people often forget is that within those city limits, there are also many people trying very hard to provide the best life possible for their families. Many who will struggle for the most basic of essential life items just to survive another day.
In a world where so often we find reasons to argue and allow people with selfish motives to polarize us as a society, I commend those like KingJoseph Edwards and his lovely family and others who participated in choosing to make a positive impact in the community. It's also another reason to support the Syracuse football program, a team whose players and coaches are trying to get out in the community and not just ask for your support by attending games but also help make our community better as well. I am so happy to support those who look out into our community and see people, not narratives or news clips.
I am a 52-year-old lifelong fan of the Orange. I love Syracuse University and I love supporting them and the sports teams they have. But I am also someone proud to call Syracuse and CNY my home. I know it's not perfect but I can promise you that no place is and that if we don't help each other and form better communities together, we will only see things get worse for everyone in the area.
And I will happily support the efforts of people like KingJoseph any chance I get to help our community and I look forward to doing more events like this event that he plans to do again next year or others as much as I can. I believe in us as a community and those who put the US in SyracUSe.
