Syracuse Football: My take on which bowl games are the best fit for Cuse and the fans
By Chuck Fiello
Recently I saw my Loud House brother Neil Adler posted about bowl projections for Syracuse football. And you can click the link to see more if you’re interested because Neil shared the views of a few different prognosticators.
So that piece and conversations I’ve witnessed got me thinking, and I’m actually writing today from the viewpoint of the fan base, including myself.
For instance, is the Pinstripe Bowl something fans would be excited to see? Or the Fenway Bowl? Or the Duke's Mayo Bowl? What bowl would you as a fan like to see or not like to see?
Did the two losses influence a potential bowl bid like it’s obviously impacting their ability to be ranked even though other teams also have two losses? Sadly we live in an era where teams have to pass some kind of eye test from so-called experts to be considered good enough to them to be worthy.
Should fans keep in mind such implications like that this is a first-year head coach when balancing out expectations? With four games remaining, what will be their final record? Can Cuse win at least three out of four and end with nine wins? Could they win out by upsetting now #4 Miami and, if chaos ensues, be looking at a possible ACC championship game appearance?
Examining which bowl games are the best potential fit for Syracuse football and the fan base.
That’s a lot to consider. I have seen many who think that a Pinstripe or Fenway Bowl game might be seen as a sort of a slight because of preseason expectations and the “been there, done that” mentality. But I also think personally that any bowl is better than none.
But with fans expectations and some players having NFL possibilities, unless this team wins the ACC somehow, I think that something like the Duke’s Mayo Bowl or even a Sun Bowl will be enough to maybe keep many more interested. And I agree with my friend Brian here below too that these two options are a very good statement for the future of the program in head coach Fran Brown’s first season.
And while I understand that the Pinstripe Bowl is closer to Syracuse, allowing more fans to travel to it, I can tell you from experience that Charlotte, NC (the home of the Duke’s Mayo Bowl) isn’t a bad decision either. It’s less than a day's drive down 81 to 77, and that area has many former Syracuse residents and alumni as well.
So obviously we have to wait and see how everything plays out with 4-5 games remaining for most college football teams. And it’s not just Syracuse’s season that could impact the outcome as it also depends on how other teams finish the season as well.
But as of right now, it is also good to see what options are available and why winning can still matter, which can be a big difference in which bowl options you have and getting yourself in the best position possible. Honestly, I am just happy for any chance to watch more Cuse sports, no matter how I can, and I bet many fans feel the same way.
