Syracuse basketball appears to have its new general manager.
Syracuse.com's Mike Waters provided the scoop, reporting that the Orange is planning to hire Hampton associate head coach/general manager Greg Fahey as SU's new GM. He would replace former Syracuse basketball general manager Alex Kline.
A huge congrats and welcome from 'Cuse Nation to Greg! Fahey's expected hiring would represent one of the final pieces of new head coach Gerry McNamara's staff.
Fahey is in his second season at Hampton, which is located in Hampton, Va., and is a member of the Coastal Athletic Association ("CAA"). In the 2025-26 campaign, the Pirates weren't good, as they sported a 13-19 overall record.
The GM role is critical at college basketball programs, as this position focuses on name, image and likeness ("NIL") initiatives, revenue-sharing, roster construction, recruiting, scouting and the transfer portal, among other things.
According to his bio on the Hampton athletics department Web site, Fahey has experience in the NIL arena, including his tenure with the Pirates and also when he served as the special assistant to head coach Ed Cooley at Big East Conference member Georgetown during the 2023-24 stanza.
Syracuse basketball reportedly has honed in on a new general manager.
Here is more about Fahey's prior coaching experience before Hampton and Georgetown:
•Assistant coach at Fairleigh Dickinson's Florham campus from 2016 to 2018
•Graduate assistant at Providence from 2018 to 2019
•Director of basketball operations at Siena from 2019 to 2021
•Assistant coach at Siena from 2021 to 2023
It's important to note that McNamara, most recently, served as Siena's head coach over the past two seasons before being hired as the new head coach of the Orange last month.
What caught my eye about Fahey is his previous stops at the prep level. The native of Randolph, N.J., began his coaching career as the junior varsity head coach and a varsity assistant coach for three years at the St. Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark, N.J., which is an excellent prep-school program.
Additionally, over four campaigns, Fahey was a coach of the Albany, N.Y.-based City Rocks, a terrific AAU program on Nike's EYBL circuit. Numerous City Rocks standouts have gone on to suit up for Syracuse basketball, and Fahey's AAU connections will prove valuable to the 'Cuse from a recruiting standpoint.
Fahey has an undergraduate degree from Marist College, where he was a four-year manager of the men's basketball team, and a master's degree from Providence.
