Syracuse basketball's expected non-conference bout with former Big East Conference foe Providence will take place in mid-December in Boston and is part of what's known as the Hall of Fame Series in collegiate hoops.

In late March, CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein first reported that the Orange, under first-year head coach Gerry McNamara, would face the Friars at the TD Garden in Boston. SU Athletics announced on Tuesday that this non-conference contest will transpire on Saturday, Dec. 19.

The game between the 'Cuse and Providence, which is led by Western New York native and former South Florida head coach Bryan Hodgson, who was a rumored candidate for SU's vacancy earlier this offseason, is part of the TNT Sports Hall of Fame Series Boston.

The Hall of Fame Series, owned and operated by the Phoenix-based Position Sports, "is a collection of multi-game, singular events that showcase several of the top collegiate basketball teams in exciting neutral-site, non-conference matchups played domestically and abroad," according to the Position Sports Web site.

Syracuse basketball will duel with Providence in Beantown.

Another non-conference game that will be part of the TNT Sports Hall of Fame Series Boston in 2026-27 pits Michigan against UConn on Friday, Nov. 6, at the TD Garden. In the championship encounter of the 2026 NCAA Tournament, the Wolverines beat the Huskies, a group that has claimed recent national titles in 2023 and 2024.

For the Orange-Friars affair, the tip-off time and television information will be announced at a later date, according to the press release from Syracuse Athletics.

The teams' rivalry dates back to the 1969-70 campaign. Syracuse basketball is 48-10 against Providence and has won nine of the past 10 meetings. They haven't played one another since the 2012-13 season, when the Orange knocked off the Friars at home, 84-59.

Said McNamara: "Syracuse has a rivalry with Providence that dates more than 55 years, and we look forward to the challenge of competing against the Friars. ... We appreciate the opportunity to return to New England, an area that includes a large and enthusiastic group of SU alumni and fans."

The 'Cuse non-conference docket is also expected to feature games against St. John's at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Rutgers at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., Indiana at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, and a contest in the annual ACC-SEC Challenge, among others.
