After the transfer portal window for men's hoops officially opened on Monday, word arrived on Tuesday morning that yet another Syracuse basketball player will enter the portal.

Per multiple media reports and social media posts on Tuesday, Orange redshirt sophomore guard/wing Chance Westry will go into the portal. More than anything else, I'm wishing much success and good health to Chance, whose college career thus far has been hindered by injuries and illnesses.

The 6-foot-6, 205-pound Westry, who hails from Harrisburg, Pa., was a top-40 national prospect in the 2022 class who transferred to the 'Cuse after spending his freshman campaign at Southeastern Conference member Auburn.

As a freshman with the Tigers, he appeared in 11 games before suffering an injury. In his sophomore season, now with Syracuse basketball, Westry didn't play at all. In his redshirt sophomore term during the 2024-25 campaign, when the Orange went 14-19 overall, Westry appeared in just three contests, logging a combined 11 minutes.

On Tuesday, in national transfer rankings posted on the 247Sports Web site, Westry was rated four stars, No. 76 overall and No. 10 at combo guard.

Numerous Syracuse basketball players are hitting the transfer portal.

The current transfer portal window will run from March 24 to April 22. Candidly, I'm not surprised to see that Westry is transferring out, given that he's barely played in his two seasons on the Hill.

In 2024-25, the Orange had 12 scholarship players, five of whom exhausted their college eligibility. That left seven guys from the team's roster this past term. So far, at least four players with eligibility left have revealed plans to enter the portal, and they are Westry, redshirt junior guard Kyle Cuffe Jr., junior small forward Chris Bell and freshman guard Elijah Moore.

This means three players on the 'Cuse 2024-25 roster, who have collegiate eligibility remaining, have decisions to make about their future plans. They are junior guard J.J. Starling, freshman power forward Donnie Freeman and freshman forward Petar Majstorovic.

Freeman was having a good freshman campaign before getting injured. He appeared in 14 games. Starling, who also missed some time this past season due to an injury, led the Syracuse basketball 2024-25 roster in scoring, at 17.8 points per contest.

I assume that the Orange staff's biggest priority this off-season, as it relates to roster retention, is to do whatever it can to make sure that Starling and Freeman return to Central New York for 2025-26.

At the high school level, the 'Cuse 2025 class features four-star shooting guard Kiyan Anthony, four-star forward Sadiq White Jr., four-star combo guard Luke Fennell and three-star wing Aaron Womack.
