Four-star combo guard Luke Fennell from Melbourne, Australia, one of four commits in the Syracuse basketball 2025 class at the high school level, will play in the upcoming FIBA U19 World Cup, which will take place from June 28 until July 6 in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Per a press release this week from Basketball Australia, the 6-foot-6, 190-pound Fennell is one of 12 players who will suit up for Australia in the FIBA U19 World Cup. From the announcement: "Australia has qualified for 15 of the 17 FIBA U19 Men’s World Cups since the tournament began in 1979 and remains the only nation outside Europe and North America to have claimed the title" in 2003.
A huge congrats to Luke!
There are 16 teams in this year's FIBA U19 World Cup. The event commences with group play. Australia is in the ultra-competitive Group D, along with the United States, France and Cameroon. Australia, interestingly enough, will kick off its Group D games by facing the United States on June 28.
Syracuse basketball incoming freshman Luke Fennell is playing in an international event this summer.
Fennell, in the 2024-25 campaign, competed for South East Melbourne Phoenix in the National Basketball League ("NBL"), a professional league with teams in Australia and New Zealand. Earlier this year, he also played for Victoria in Australia's U20 national championships, where Fennell had some impressive performances.
When I wrote this article, within the 2025 class, 247Sports placed Fennell as four stars, No. 125 nationally, No. 21 at shooting guard and No. 2 in Australia. The industry-generated 247Sports Composite, the industry-generated On3 Industry Ranking and On3 rate him as a three-star 2025 prospect.
Other members of the 'Cuse 2025 cycle at the high school level are four-star shooting guard Kiyan Anthony from New York City, four-star forward Sadiq White Jr. from Charlotte, N.C., and three-star wing Aaron Womack from the Milwaukee area.
At the time of this writing, this Syracuse basketball 2025 class is No. 10 nationally per the 247Sports Composite, No. 9 on Rivals.com and No. 24 via the On3 Web site. Looking ahead to the 2025-26 season, the Orange has 12 scholarship players, with three scholarships still available.
The squad's 2025-26 roster features two returnees, six college transfers and the four incoming freshmen.
