Syracuse Football: Top analyst notes length, speed of new defensive back commit from N.Y.
By Neil Adler
Late Friday night, Syracuse football coaches picked up their second verbal commitment in the team’s 2025 recruiting cycle.
New York state product Javon Lawrence, a speedy and lengthy defensive back in the junior cycle who was offered by the Orange in early March, said via his X page that he was verbally pledging to the ‘Cuse.
The 6-foot-2, 170-pound Lawrence is a standout at North Rockland High School in Thiells, N.Y., which is a suburb of New York City.
First and foremost, ‘Cuse Nation sends out a big congratulations to Javon!
Syracuse football has a commitment from 2025 DB Javon Lawrence.
According to his MaxPreps bio, during the 2023 season for North Rockland (7-3 overall), Lawrence tallied 17 solo tackles, 13 assisted tackles, 30 total tackles, one tackle for a loss, and four passes defended.
Lawrence said via his X page on March 3 that he had secured a scholarship offer from the Orange staff, and it represented his first Division 1 offer.
Fewer than two weeks later, he had verbally committed to Syracuse football, which is led by head coach and ace recruiter Fran Brown. It should be noted here that Brown, most recently, served as the defensive backs coach at Southeastern Conference powerhouse Georgia.
Following his scholarship offer from the ‘Cuse, Lawrence said to analyst Charles Kang of The Juice Online, “It was a blessing getting offered and recognized by Cuse. I know they’re a very extraordinary program. It was great being recognized by them.”
Lawrence adds, “I’m a physical DB with very quick speed and a long reach that loves to hit.”
Top analyst Steve Wiltfong, the director of recruiting at 247Sports, said in a post on X, “North Rockland (NY) 2025 CB Javon Lawrence was offered by #Syracuse earlier this month and committed this evening. Length and speed, traits Fran Brown, Elijah Robinson and company look forward to developing in an Orange uniform.”
In late January of this year, the Orange coaching staff first got on the board in the 2025 class. That’s when four-star edge and top-300 national prospect Sharlandiin Strange of Cheltenham High School in Wyncote, Pa., verbally committed to Syracuse football over Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Southern California.
On Saturday, the ‘Cuse 2025 cycle checked in at No. 58 nationally, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, as well as No. 56 overall via Rivals.com.
