Syracuse football was one of many schools that had reached out to one of the top prospects in the transfer portal, elite edge rusher Trey Moore, according to a media report.

In recent days, On3 national recruiting expert Hayes Fawcett said via X that the 6-foot-3, 235-pound Moore had heard from dozens of college teams since entering the transfer portal on December 5, including the ‘Cuse.

Naturally, that got me intrigued. However, Moore, a standout redshirt sophomore at the University of Texas at San Antonio (“UTSA”), committed to Texas on Saturday afternoon, per another post on X from Fawcett.

Of course, I’m wishing Trey all the best with the Longhorns, a Big 12 Conference powerhouse that will play in this season’s College Football Playoff and will move to the Southeastern Conference in the future.

Syracuse football had contacted 4-star edge transfer Trey Moore.

Moore hails from San Antonio. Leading up to his commitment announcement, Texas was receiving some analyst buzz on several recruiting Web sites for him, so I’m not surprised that Moore committed to the Longhorns.

He had a fabulous 2023 season at UTSA. In late November, UTSA announced that Moore was named the American Athletic Conference defensive player of the year.

At the time of that announcement, UTSA noted that Moore, in 2023, had registered 45 total tackles, 30 solo tackles, 17.5 tackles for a loss and a school-record 14 sacks.

If that wasn’t enough, Moore had also tallied three pass breakups, three quarterback hurries, one interception, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. That’s ridiculous.

It’s no wonder that he has been so highly placed in national transfer rankings from recruiting services.

When I wrote this column on Saturday, 247Sports had him as four stars, No. 12 overall and No. 3 at the edge. The industry-generated On3 Industry Ranking placed Moore as four stars, No. 14 nationally and No. 3 at his position.

It was probably a long shot for the Orange to land Moore, however, the ‘Cuse coaching staff has still done a mighty impressive job with its 2024 class.

As of Saturday, Syracuse football had secured commitments from at least 18 high school seniors and at least seven college transfers for its 2024 cycle.

Among its signed high school seniors, the Orange has a couple of linebackers/edge rushers. Additionally, the ‘Cuse picked up a massive commitment out of the portal from Fadil Diggs, a Texas A&M junior defensive lineman.

In national transfer ratings from 247Sports, Diggs on Saturday arrived at No. 35 across the country and No. 6 at the edge.
