Syracuse basketball's non-conference schedule in the upcoming season is getting closer to being finalized.
The Orange, in the 2024-25 term, will play 11 non-conference games and 20 Atlantic Coast Conference encounters. In late February, the ACC announced the conference's pairings for 2024-25, and you can see which league foes the 'Cuse will face via this press release from SU Athletics.
In mid-June, word broke that in the 2024 SEC/ACC Challenge, Syracuse basketball will travel to Southeastern Conference member Tennessee, which I'm delighted about, because my son primarily lives in Nashville, Tenn., and he loves the Vols (as well as 'Cuse).
Last November, at the 2023 Allstate Maui Invitational in Hawaii, a top-10 Tennessee squad defeated Syracuse basketball after pulling away late, 73-56. In 2023-24, the Volunteers would go 27-9 overall, reach the Elite Eight of this spring's NCAA Tournament, and finish at No. 5 in both major top-25 polls.
In their all-time series together, Tennessee is 4-3 against the 'Cuse.
What's more, a few days ago, college basketball analyst Rocco Miller said in a post on his X page that the Orange will host Youngstown State as part of the team's non-conference calendar. In 2023-24, this Horizon League school sported a solid 22-10 record.
As far as I can tell, this would prove the first-ever meeting between the 'Cuse and the Penguins.
Here's what we know about the Syracuse basketball non-conference docket in the 2024-25 season.
•Syracuse basketball versus Colgate at the JMA Wireless Dome on November 12, Miller has reported on his X page.
•Syracuse basketball will host Youngstown State at the Dome on November 16, per Miller.
•Syracuse basketball will have two games in the 2024 Legends Classic at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., on November 21 and November 22. The field also includes Texas, Texas Tech, and Saint Joseph's.
•Syracuse basketball against Cornell on November 27 at the Dome, Miller has noted on his X page.
•Syracuse basketball at Tennessee on December 3 in the 2024 SEC/ACC Challenge.
•Syracuse basketball against Georgetown at the Dome on December 14, according to CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein.
•Syracuse basketball versus Maryland, also at the Barclays Center, on December 21, per Rothstein as well.
•Additionally, Rothstein has reported that the Orange will host Albany, although a date has yet to be disclosed.
If my math is correct (never a given), the 'Cuse has nine non-conference games listed here, although SU Athletics hasn't officially announced numerous of them. This means that the Orange still has two non-conference affairs that aren't yet known.
A season ago, under first-year head coach Adrian Autry, Syracuse basketball went 20-12 overall, winning 20 regular-season games for the first time in a decade. The 'Cuse, in 2024-25, will look to get back to the NCAA Tournament following three straight absences from the annual Big Dance.
