Quarterback Kyle McCord, who had a record-setting 2024 season with Syracuse football, played quite well in a win for his Green Bay Packers at home on Friday night.
The Packers trailed by 11 points, 38-27, with under five minutes left at Lambeau Field in a preseason NFL battle between Green Bay and the Arizona Cardinals. The 6-foot-3, 218-pound McCord, however, threw two touchdown passes late in the fourth quarter to engineer a 42-38 comeback triumph for the Packers in front of an announced crowd of 71,678.

NFL teams have to reduce their rosters to 53 players by this Sunday at 6:00 pm EST. McCord, who began his NFL career with Philadelphia and signed with Green Bay this past January after his practice squad contract with the Eagles expired, certainly helped his chances of making the Packers' 53-man roster for the upcoming 2026-27 regular season.

Zach Kruse, the managing editor of The Packers Wire, had this to say in a piece on Saturday morning: "To his credit, Kyle McCord turned this into a legitimate question over three excellent preseason games. Tyrod Taylor is going to be the backup behind Jordan Love, but are the Packers willing to risk McCord to waivers? He looks like the right long-term developmental option, and teams don't like risking good quarterbacks. But keeping three quarterbacks would be a roster luxury for a team with a settled situation at the top."

McCord transferred from Ohio State to the Orange for the 2024 campaign, his senior year and the first with Fran Brown leading the 'Cuse. Syracuse went 10-3 overall, and McCord set all kinds of SU and Atlantic Coast Conference records, while finishing in the top 10 of the Heisman Trophy voting that year.
Former Syracuse football great Zaire Franklin, a linebacker for the Packers, didn't appear to play in the Friday night win, as the Green Bay coaching staff held various veterans and starters out of the game.
