In what is a very cool move, the Syracuse basketball official social media accounts are doing a three-part documentary of sorts. The subject is new head basketball coach Adrian “Red” Autry.

For years, Coach Autry stood beside Hall of Fame head coach Jim Boeheim as part of his staff. But following last season, Coach Boeheim retired, and the university named Coach Autry to replace him.

Many Cuse fans watched him play. Many of us watched him assist in coaching duties. But how many of us feel like we actually know the guy well and maybe even understand why he was the right man for the job?

Well, this series will allow you to see that. Part one was released on Wednesday and I loved it. It showed who he was as a young man and what led him to get recruited to Syracuse University, including talking about playing AAU ball and at Rucker Park, a well-known spot in New York City where many legends have made their mark.

New series sheds light on Syracuse basketball first-year head coach Adrian Autry.

Syracuse basketball had the same head coach for 47 years and 1,116 wins before Autry was named head coach earlier this year. I myself was 4 years old when Boeheim became head coach so I don’t remember the program before him. So I applaud Syracuse Athletics with an introduction series welcoming us into a new era.

And as the 2023-24 season approaches, the new era will look different in many ways including on the sideline and in press conferences. Therefore I think it’s fitting that even though Autry played here and was an assistant for many years, we get a little more intimate and knowledgeable about who he is, where he came from and maybe the style of Coach he plans to be.

I fully expect with what little I do know that, much like is discussed in the video, he will be a very good mentor, coach and guide for the young men who come play at Syracuse. I’m excited to see this new season and videos like this only help build it up.

So be sure to check out the official Syracuse Athletics YouTube page for the other two installments soon. According to SU Athletics, episodes 2 and 3 will debut on September 27 and October 4, respectively.
