Syracuse Football: Experts project 4-star QB commit will flip to Gamecocks
By Neil Adler
Earlier this month, multiple media reports suggested that 2023 four-star quarterback LaNorris Sellers planned to honor his verbal commitment to Syracuse football and sign his national letter of intent with the Orange during the early national signing period that begins on Wednesday, Dec. 21.
However, on Tuesday, at least two experts logged predictions with medium confidence levels where they forecast that the 6-foot-2 Sellers will flip his commitment from Syracuse football to his home-state Southeastern Conference team, South Carolina.
Sellers, who was a senior standout for South Florence High School in Florence, S.C., has a strong relationship with ‘Cuse offensive coordinator Jason Beck.
But the Gamecocks, which offered a scholarship to Sellers in October, have been aggressively recruiting him lately, per reports. And the opportunity for Sellers to play close to home, I imagine, is appealing to this talented young man.
Syracuse football is in a recruiting battle with USC for 2023 four-star quarterback LaNorris Sellers.
On Tuesday, South Carolina received crystal-ball predictions for Sellers from 247Sports national analyst Brian Dohn and 247Sports director of football recruiting Steve Wiltfong.
Wiltfong also published a piece on Tuesday entitled, “South Carolina in strong position to flip four-star QB LaNorris Sellers.”
While analyst projections aren’t always correct, this is not a good sign for the Orange’s chances with Sellers, who recently led South Florence to the South Carolina Class AAAA state championship.
During the 2022 term, his senior year with the Bruins, Sellers threw for 2,948 yards, with 45 touchdowns and just two interceptions. He also rushed for 1,338 yards and scored 17 touchdowns on the ground.
Syracuse football offered Sellers in January after he de-committed from Virginia. Cavaliers’ offensive coordinator Robert Anae and quarterbacks coach Jason Beck had left UVA for the Orange, and Sellers gave a verbal commitment to the ‘Cuse in March.
Not too long ago, however, Beck was promoted to offensive coordinator for Syracuse football after Anae took the same position at N.C. State.
Interestingly enough, Sellers did pick up recently new scholarship offers from Liberty and Georgia Tech, although my sense is that his recruitment is coming down to Syracuse football and South Carolina.
Sellers has recently vaulted to a four-star prospect, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. In the 2023 cycle, per the composite, he is now No. 395 overall, No. 26 at quarterback and No. 5 in South Carolina.
Sellers is one of the fastest-rising, dual-threat quarterbacks in the senior class. He is a top-15 dual-threat QB, according to both ESPN and On3.
On3 also recently jumped Sellers to four stars, No. 156 nationally, No. 12 at quarterback and No. 3 in South Carolina.
He is planning to conduct his signing-day ceremony this Friday, Dec. 23, at 11:30 am, Sellers recently said on his Twitter page.
