Syracuse Football: 4-star QB commit a state champ, skyrockets in rankings
By Neil Adler
Syracuse football fans are anxious to see whether the Orange coaching staff can hold on to 2023 four-star quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who just put forth a ridiculous senior season and is being recruited hard by an in-state college squad.
Media reports, to date, suggest that the 6-foot-2 Sellers is expected to honor his commitment to the ‘Cuse and sign with Syracuse football.
After previously committing to Virginia in the summer of 2021, Sellers reopened his recruitment following coaching changes in the Cavaliers program, and he ended up giving a verbal commitment to the Orange this past March after picking up a ‘Cuse scholarship offer in January.
However, the star for South Florence High School in Florence, S.C., a group that recently captured its first football championship in school history, has said in several interviews lately that Southeastern Conference member South Carolina continues to aggressively pursue Sellers.
Syracuse football 4-star QB commit LaNorris Sellers recently soared in new national rankings.
Last weekend, Sellers led the South Florence Bruins to a 57-30 victory over Northwestern High School from Rock Hill, S.C., in the South Carolina Class AAAA state title contest. The Bruins wrapped up the 2022 stanza with a perfect 15-0 mark.
According to reports, in the championship clash, Sellers tallied 260 passing yards, 192 rushing yards and six total touchdowns. For his entire senior year, the Orange commit put up some ridiculous video game-like numbers.
According to a tweet from journalist Ian Guerin, for all of 2022, Sellers threw for 2,948 yards, with 45 touchdowns and just two interceptions. That’s insane. Sellers also rushed for 1,338 yards and scored 17 TDs on the ground.
Reports said that Syracuse football offensive coordinator Robert Anae and ‘Cuse quarterbacks coach Jason Beck were in attendance during South Florence’s recent win in the state championship game.
Anae and Beck, as we all know, were formerly in those same roles with UVA when Sellers initially committed to Virginia. He has said that he has developed a strong relationship with Anae, Beck and Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers.
The early signing period for high-school football players begins on December 21, so it could be a nervous week or two for the Orange and its fan base.
"Despite being recruited hard by South Carolina, Sellers did recently tell SyracuseOnSI publisher Mike McAllister, “As of right now, I’m sticking with Syracuse. They stuck with me so it’s only right I stick with them too. It just shows their loyalty, really. The relationship we built and how they trusted me and how I can trust them too.”"
By the way, this past June, the Orange offered a scholarship to 2025 wide receiver Jayden Sellers, who is the younger brother of LaNorris Sellers and also suits up for South Florence.
Most of the primary recruiting services still rate Sellers as a three-star prospect, although I would anticipate that changing to four stars given the senior year that he possessed.
Both ESPN and On3 rank him as a top-15 dual-threat quarterback across the country in the 2023 cycle.
On3 recently updated its national rankings for this class, and the recruiting service placed Sellers as four stars, No. 156 nationally, No. 12 at quarterback and No. 3 in South Carolina.
Per a tweet this week from the South Florence football team, Sellers has been named the South Carolina Football Coaches Association 4A Lower State Offensive Player of the Year. And deservingly so, I might add.
