Syracuse football 4-star QB commit being recruited hard by in-state team
By Neil Adler
Syracuse football 2023 four-star commit LaNorris Sellers is having a tremendous senior year, as the top-15 quarterback has led his high school to a state championship game in South Carolina this coming Saturday.
The 6-foot-2 Sellers, one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the 2023 class, verbally committed to the Orange in early March after previously committing to Virginia in the summer of 2021.
After the 2021 season ended, UVA had a change in head coaches, and Cavaliers offensive coordinator Robert Anae, as well as quarterbacks coach Jason Beck, both left Charlottesville, Va., to take the same positions with the ‘Cuse.
With all of the coaching switches at Virginia, Sellers reopened his recruitment. Syracuse football offered him a scholarship in January, and he committed to the Orange about two months later.
Syracuse football may be facing some competition for 2023 QB commit LaNorris Sellers.
Lou Bezjak of The State, in a recent piece, noted that Sellers “plans to sign during the December signing period and enroll in college in January. Syracuse remains atop his list right now.”
That being said, Sellers said in The State article that South Carolina, a home-state college squad for him, is “pushing hard” for the Orange 2023 commit. He said he talks “every day” with the Gamecocks coaching staff.
"As far as the ‘Cuse is concerned, Sellers said, “They built a relationship from year one. When I got hurt last season, they stuck with me. It is right for me to stick with them.”"
I’m not in any way suggesting that Sellers is going to de-commit from the Orange, but South Carolina in pursuit of him is something to at least monitor.
Last weekend, the Gamecocks won by one point at top-10 Clemson. They also recently destroyed top-10 Tennessee at home. South Carolina is presently ranked No. 20 in the major top-25 polls and has an 8-4 overall record.
Sellers, for my money, has proven the best high-school football player in the state of South Carolina during the current 2022 season.
He is a senior at South Florence High School in Florence, S.C. His younger brother and South Florence teammate, 2025 wide receiver Jayden Sellers, was offered by Syracuse football in late June.
On Saturday, Dec. 3, beginning at 7 pm, the undefeated South Florence Bruins (14-0) will clash with Northwestern High School in Rock Hill, S.C., for the Class AAAA state title, an encounter that will take place at Benedict College in Columbia, S.C.
In a 43-27 semifinal triumph over A.C. Flora High School in Columbia, Sellers compiled 228 yards rushing, five touchdowns and threw for 140 yards in the air, per Bezjak.
Most of the primary recruiting services rate Sellers as a three-star player in 2023. But On3 deems him as four stars, No. 156 nationally and No. 12 at his position.
ESPN, by extension, ranks Sellers as the No. 13 dual-threat QB within the entire senior class. I sincerely hope that Syracuse football coaches are able to hang on to this young man.
Bezjak’s story says that Sellers is also hearing from Georgia, which won the most recent College Football Playoff national championship and is a virtual lock to get into the latest CFP as well.
