Mired in a two-game losing streak that has some Orange fans going nuts on social media, No. 22 Syracuse football will look to right the ship when it travels to long-time rival Pittsburgh this coming Saturday afternoon in an Atlantic Coast Conference collision.

The ‘Cuse got pushed around in a 41-24 setback at home to Notre Dame this past Saturday afternoon. The Orange roster is absolutely banged up, and the Fighting Irish imposed its will and shredded the smaller Syracuse football defensive line to the tune of nearly 250 rushing yards.

The week before, the Orange fell to No. 5 Clemson in Death Valley in an exciting ACC battle that the ‘Cuse totally could have won. So with a contingent of the fan base frustrated, Syracuse football (6-2, 3-1) now has to contend with the Panthers (4-4, 1-3) away from the Hill.

In fact, three out of the final four regular-season contests for the Orange are on the road. First up is Pitt, followed by Florida State coming to the JMA Wireless Dome. Then, to close out the 2022 term prior to a bowl game, Syracuse football will head to Wake Forest and Boston College.

The good news is that the Orange has already achieved bowl eligibility. The bad news is that the ‘Cuse has struggled against the Panthers in recent years, and Syracuse football has unfortunately lost a bunch of key Orange players to season-ending injuries.

When I wrote this column, WynnBET had the Panthers as a 3.5-point betting favorite. Also at the time of this writing, the over/under was set at 50.5 points.

Similar to the Orange, the Panthers are in the midst of a two-game setback streak. First, Pittsburgh fell by 14 points to a Louisville squad that is playing quite well these days.

This past weekend, again on the road, the Panthers lost by 18 points to nationally-ranked North Carolina.

By no means is Pittsburgh a super awesome team to date in the 2022 stanza, however, the Panthers are on their own turf.  Pitt is a physical group, it has a star running back, and the Panthers’ defense is pretty good versus the run.

During the two losses endured by Syracuse football, the ‘Cuse has struggled with its rushing attack. Last weekend against Notre Dame, starting quarterback Garrett Shrader didn’t play in the second half.

In his place, backup quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, a transfer from Florida, looked pretty darn good throwing the ball, by and large. We’ll see what the situation at quarterback ends up being when the Orange faces Pittsburgh.

My heart tells me that, overall, Syracuse football is a “better” squad than the Panthers. But the ‘Cuse has a lot of things to clean up, its roster’s depth has taken a huge hit, and I just feel like Pittsburgh, being at home, is going to prevail in this one.

Injuries, how to watch, live stream, next game
On the injury front, prior to the Fighting Irish non-conference encounter, fullback/tight end Chris Elmore, linebacker Stefon Thompson, wide receiver Isaiah Jones, defensive lineman Terry Lockett and defensive lineman Denis Jaquez Jr. were all out for the remainder of the 2022 campaign.

More sad news came on Monday, as head coach Dino Babers confirmed that star cornerback Garrett Williams, too, is out for the rest of the 2022 term due to a knee injury. Williams, like Shrader, didn’t compete in the second half versus Notre Dame.

More than anything else, sending lots of positive vibes and love to Garrett Williams. While all college football teams have to deal with injuries, the Syracuse football roster has been really devastated by injuries.

Let’s see how guys further down on the depth chart, who will now get more minutes on the field, respond.
