Syracuse football has started out the 2022 season on a really high note, as the Orange walloped Louisville at home in week one and, this past Saturday night, trounced UConn on the road to move to 2-0 so far in this young term.

Up next for the ‘Cuse is a challenging and important non-conference clash. This coming Saturday afternoon, Syracuse football will welcome Big Ten Conference member Purdue to the JMA Wireless Dome.

The Boilermakers, I believe, will provide a solid litmus test for the Orange in 2022. I say this because the Louisville encounter was the 2022 season opener, and no one on either side truly knew what to expect.

And the ‘Cuse was a huge betting favorite at UConn, and I didn’t really think the Huskies would end up prevailing over Syracuse football.

When I wrote this column, the FanDuel Sportsbook had installed Purdue as a 1.5-point betting favorite. The over/under was set at 58.5 points, and the moneyline for the Orange was -115.

Man. I have to admit, I’m really torn about which squad to pick in this intriguing non-conference collision. Purdue was one of the best Big Ten units in 2021, going 9-4 overall.

So far this season, the Boilermakers are 1-1 overall, destroying Indiana State while losing in a tight contest to Penn State (which is now ranked in the major top-25 polls).

Both of these affairs were at home for Purdue, so when it heads to the Hill, it will be the team’s first road game of the 2022 stanza.

When the polls came out earlier this week, Purdue received one vote in the Associated Press poll, while Syracuse football picked up seven votes in the Coaches poll.

I feel like the Orange is brimming with confidence at this juncture, and I expect the Dome crowd to be energized, frenetic and crazy loud.

I get that the Boilermakers are the betting favorite, at least for now, but I’m going to go with the ‘Cuse in this one by three to four points.

Injuries, how to watch, live stream, next game

We’ll continue to keep our fellow Syracuse football fans apprised of any developments on the injury front. Both fullback/tight end Chris Elmore and linebacker Stefon Thompson are out for the 2022 campaign after suffering unfortunate injuries against the Cardinals.

Syracuse football is expected to kick off versus Purdue beginning at 12 pm on Saturday, Sept. 17. ESPN2 will provide television coverage.

By the way, the Orange is 0-1 all-time against the Boilermakers. In September of 2004, Purdue destroyed Syracuse football, 51-0, in West Lafayette, Ind.

For ‘Cuse and Purdue fans who want to stream this game, you can check it out on fuboTV.

After Syracuse football hosts the Boilermakers, the Orange will next welcome fellow Atlantic Coast Conference team Virginia to Central New York. The ‘Cuse and the Cavaliers will do battle on Friday, Sept. 23, with the kick-off scheduled for 7 pm and TV coverage on ESPN.
