Well, well … when it comes to predicting Syracuse football games, I finally got something right. Haha.

This past Saturday night, before 37,000-plus screaming Orange fans inside the newly renamed JMA Wireless Dome, the ‘Cuse handled fellow Atlantic Coast Conference team Louisville with relative ease in the 2022 season opener, and I had actually picked the Orange (1-0) to prevail in this league bout!

Without getting too far ahead of myself, if you put the abundance of penalties that the ‘Cuse received to the side for a second, the Orange produced a really stellar performance on offense, defense and special teams in crushing the Cardinals (0-1) by a final count 31-7.

The ‘Cuse defense, praised by some analysts in the pre-season as having loads of potential in 2022, lived up to that hype in absolutely containing the Louisville offense and its star quarterback, Malik Cunningham.

Syracuse football won the turnover battle and the time-of-possession category, which was huge on both fronts. Orange quarterback  Garrett Shrader was awesome in the air and on the ground, while stand-out running back Sean Tucker did his usual thing, producing just under 100 rushing yards along with 85 receiving yards.

Now that the ‘Cuse has a triumph under its belt, the fan base is pumped, Orange players have to be feeling confident, and the team next turns its attention to the Connecticut Huskies. This coming Saturday evening, the Orange will make a trip to UConn in a non-conference contest.

Syracuse injury report at UConn for week 2

For the latest updates on any potential developments on the injury front, I’d recommend taking a look at Syracuse.com. I’d keep an eye out for Tucker, fullback Chris Elmore and linebacker Stefon Thompson, all of whom got a bit banged up last Saturday versus Louisville.

Quick update here. Head coach Dino Babers said on Monday that both Elmore and Thompson are out for the 2022 season with injuries, which is just awful, awful news.

Syracuse at UConn prediction for week 2

I have to say that I’m really encouraged by what the Orange did in week one against a Cardinals group that totally destroyed the ‘Cuse in the 2021 stanza. I’d love to see the Orange keep the positive momentum going when it squares off at UConn.

The Huskies (1-1), on September 3, got into the win column in the 2022 term by defeating in-state opponent Central Connecticut, 28-3, on UConn’s home turf. To commence its 2022 campaign, the Huskies fell on August 27 at Utah State, 31-20.

In prevailing over Central Connecticut, UConn picked up its inaugural victory for first-year head coach Jim Mora, who previously served as a head coach at UCLA and in the NFL.

It’s important to note that UConn quarterback Ta’Quan Roberson, the team’s opening-day starter, is out for the remainder of the 2022 season due to a knee injury, Mora said, according to media reports such as this one from Syracuse.com. We’re of course wishing Ta’Quan a speedy recovery.

True freshman Zion Turner, who is from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was the UConn starting quarterback in the triumph over Central Connecticut.

I hope that the Orange doesn’t take the Huskies lightly, but I do believe the ‘Cuse is the better team here and will end up succeeding on the road.

Syracuse next game and schedule

After the Orange takes on (and hopefully takes down) Connecticut, the ‘Cuse will next have another non-conference collision. On Saturday, Sept. 17, beginning at 12 pm, the Orange will welcome Big Ten Conference member Purdue to the Hill.

This intriguing encounter between the Orange and the Boilermakers will get televised on ESPN2.
