Syracuse Basketball: Buzz for 4-star Chance Westry shifts to new team
By Neil Adler
A new front-runner could be emerging for Syracuse basketball 2022 target Chance Westry, who is a four-star guard and a consensus top-40 prospect in this cycle.
For a while now, Southeastern Conference member LSU had been picking up numerous predictions from national analysts and recruiting insiders as it pertains to the 6-foot-5 Westry.
But as we detailed in a recent column, LSU is reportedly no longer involved with Westry, according to media reports from college basketball insider Adam Zagoria and others.
Officially, Westry has a top 10 of the Orange, Mike Hopkins-led Washington, Maryland, Auburn, LSU, Connecticut, Southern California, Arizona State, Nebraska and DePaul.
Zagoria recently said that Westry plans to take an official visit to Southern California from September 24-26, while squads such as Auburn, the ‘Cuse and Arizona State remain in pursuit.
Earlier this summer, Westry visited several college campuses, including the Orange. He landed a scholarship offer from the ‘Cuse more than two years ago, but from what I can tell, it does seem like Syracuse basketball is a long-shot to get Westry at this juncture.
There may be a new favorite for Syracuse basketball four-star target Chance Westry.
As of Saturday afternoon, when I wrote this piece, I still saw several projections for Westry to LSU on the 247Sports Web site and Rivals.com. However, if those Tigers are no longer in the running, I’d expect those predictions to change sooner rather than later.
To that end, one recruiting insider has logged a projection for Westry to another SEC team, Auburn.
Dushawn London, an excellent national analyst for 247Sports, is predicting Westry to Auburn. London made this projection on September 17, assigning a high confidence level.
Analyst predictions can change, and often rapidly, based on how fluid a high-school prospect’s recruiting process may be. That being said, London is extremely accurate with his crystal ball picks.
Arizona State could be a significant contender for Westry as well. Per a separate tweet from Zagoria, Sun Devils head coach Bobby Hurley recently visited Westry at his prep school.
For his senior year, Westry will suit up for the powerhouse group at Hillcrest Prep in Gilbert, Ariz., along with former Orange 2022 four-star commit Kamari Lands.
We’ll continue to monitor Westry’s recruitment, although it won’t surprise me if he ends up at Auburn or another school besides the ‘Cuse.
