We recently detailed how Syracuse basketball 2023 five-star target Simeon Wilcher turned down a lucrative deal from Overtime Elite to remain at his high school in New Jersey, according to an article by college hoops insider Adam Zagoria in The Star-Ledger.
I found that this decision by the 6-foot-4 Wilcher, a top-flight combo guard in his cycle, is admirable and refreshing. For that reason alone, Wilcher’s character has me excited that the Orange is in the mix for him.
But Wilcher is tremendous on the court as well, and it seems that he has a solid interest in the ‘Cuse program. Of course, his recruiting process could have a long way to go, but it’s nonetheless encouraging what Wilcher said about Syracuse basketball in a recent interview with Mike McAllister, the publisher of SyracuseOnSI.
When asked by McAllister what his interest level is in the ‘Cuse at this juncture in his recruiting process, Wilcher responded, “They’re at high interest right now. Very high interest.”
You can’t ask for much more than that, if you’re a Syracuse basketball fan hoping that Wilcher eventually chooses the ‘Cuse.
Syracuse basketball is in the running for a 2023 five-star combo guard.
Wilcher, who recently participated in the Orange’s annual Elite Camp, is a consensus top-15 prospect across the country in his class. Some recruiting services rank him in the top-10 nationally.
According to recruiting Web sites, Wilcher recently picked up scholarship offers from DePaul out of the Big East Conference, as well as Texas Tech, a Big 12 Conference member that made the national-championship game in 2019.
Syracuse basketball coaches offered a scholarship to Wilcher in mid-July. His list of offers is growing past 20. Wilcher’s suitors, both that have given him offers and are showing interest, include Memphis, Ohio State, Oregon, Iowa, Kansas, Connecticut, Auburn, Illinois, Duke, Kentucky, Miami and UCLA.
Besides the ‘Cuse, other squads recruiting him hard are Texas Tech, DePaul, Nebraska, Auburn, and Oregon, Wilcher told McAllister.
Wilcher is heading into his junior season at Roselle Catholic High School in Roselle, N.J., which by the way is an excellent team. He also competes for one of the best AAU groups nationwide, the New York City-based NY Renaissance.
In a recently updated pre-season top-25 national poll by Samad Hines on theseasonticket.com, Roselle Catholic High School checks in at No. 20 ahead of the 2021-22 stanza.
