Syracuse Basketball: 4-star target has been tearing it up at Peach Jam
By Neil Adler
Syracuse basketball 2023 four-star prospect Gavin Griffiths is seeing his stock soar as a break-out player at the prestigious Peach Jam, according to one national recruiting analyst.
Griffiths is a talented 6-foot-7 wing out of the Kingswood Oxford School in West Hartford, Conn. He suits up on the AAU circuit with the Boston-based Expressions Elite Basketball.
Rivals.com national analyst Jamie Shaw was watching games at the 2021 Peach Jam tournament in North Augusta, S.C., prior to pool play commencing. He said in a recent article that Griffiths is his break-out 2023 prospect at this Nike Elite Youth Basketball League event.
During the first week of contests at the Peach Jam, Griffiths averaged 16.2 points, seven rebounds and 2.8 assists, while connecting on about 42 percent from beyond the arc, according to Shaw, who added about Griffiths, “He may be better than we initially thought.”
Syracuse basketball will see increased competition for four-star Gavin Griffiths.
In mid-June, college coaches could begin contacting 2023 high-school players directly, and Griffiths has witnessed his recruiting process pick up steam.
Recent scholarship offers have arrived for him from teams such as Iowa, Maryland, Dayton, Bryant, Fairfield and Hofstra. Other prior offers have come in from groups including Rutgers, UMass and Siena.
Trust me when I say that many more offers will head in the direction of Griffiths, who has emerged as one of the hottest prospects in his cycle.
I credit Syracuse basketball coaches for taking notice of his skill-set and potential early on, as ‘Cuse coaches offered Griffiths a scholarship last October.
When Rivals.com recently updated its national ratings for the 2023 class, Griffiths jumped from an unranked player to four stars and No. 71 overall.
He’s not presently rated on a national scale by some other recruiting services, but that will change. As the primary recruiting Web sites refresh their national rankings for the 2023 cycle in the near future, perhaps sometime after Peach Jam, I could envision Griffiths becoming a consensus top-50 to top-75 prospect.
He’s that good. I’ve read numerous comments of late from analysts and other recruiting insiders that speak to the versatile scoring prowess that Griffiths possesses.
He has great size, length and athleticism as a wing player who likely could suit up at shooting guard and small forward. And Griffiths appears to be of the typical mold as far as guys on the wing whom Syracuse basketball coaches like to recruit.
Without question, he would thrive in the Orange’s system, including in the team’s 2-3 zone defense. Griffiths is clearly a high-school prospect to watch in the 2023 class.
