Syracuse basketball has gotten in the recruiting battle over talented 2022 big man Kyle Filipowski, but the Orange will have to deal with a tremendous amount of stellar suitors for the four-star prospect.
The 6-foot-10 Filipowski recently disclosed via Twitter that the ‘Cuse coaching staff has offered a scholarship to him. Since that time, I’ve read a handful of articles about Filipowski, as well as comments from recruiting insiders, which suggest that the Orange could have a decent shot at landing him, despite the intense competition.
According to a review of various recruiting services, Filipowski holds about two-dozen offers from a range of high-majors squads. Those offers include from Ohio State, UCLA, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Iowa, Louisville, Purdue, Creighton, Marquette, Georgetown, Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Wake Forest, Boston College, Virginia Tech, Providence and Stanford. Oh my, that’s a mighty impressive list.
Filipowski, one of the best power forwards in his class, is a junior at the Wilbraham & Monson Academy, a prep school located in Wilbraham, Mass. Per Mike McAllister, the publisher of SyracuseOnSI, Filipowski will take an official visit to the Orange campus during the first weekend of June.
On the AAU circuit, he suits up for the New York City-based NY Renaissance, and a teammate of his on that unit is former Orange target Roddy Gayle Jr., a 2022 four-star shooting guard who has committed to Ohio State.
Syracuse basketball recently extended an offer to 2022 four-star Kyle Filipowski.
In a recent interview with Rivals.com basketball recruiting director Rob Cassidy, Filipowski said numerous other college teams could offer him soon, including “Virginia, Villanova and Duke.”
Several stories on Filipowski of late say that among the schools recruiting him the hardest are Iowa, Ohio State, UCLA and Marquette. We’ve already detailed the Ohio State connection with Gayle.
Center Micawber Etienne, a former four-star ‘Cuse target, plays for UCLA, which advanced to the 2021 Final Four earlier this month. And 2022 three-star big man Riley Mulvey, another former Syracuse basketball target, recently committed to Iowa and has reclassified to the 2021 cycle.
Filipowski, ranked as high as No. 31 nationally in the 2022 class by ESPN, told Cassidy that Gayle “is trying to get me to go” to Ohio State, and I imagine that the Buckeyes will be a strong contender for Filipowski. To date, I haven’t seen any analyst predictions for this new ‘Cuse 2022 target.
Filipowski has said in interviews that he would like to take some campus visits and isn’t in a rush to trim his list of schools still in the running.
With Orange target Brandon Huntley-Hatfield, a 2022 five-star power forward, recently selecting Tennessee and opting to reclassify up to the 2021 class, the ‘Cuse coaching staff getting into the recruiting fray for Filipowski is an encouraging development.
