Syracuse Football: Evaluating Eric Dungey trade market in the XFL
Former Syracuse football quarterback Eric Dungey is ready for playing time. Currently, he isn’t getting it, so we evaluated the XFL trade market.
Syracuse football fans miss Eric Dungey. Unfortunately, his collegiate eligibility expired so the only thirst that’ll satisfy their quench is seeing him on weekends playing in the XFL.
Sadly he hasn’t been getting much playing time for the Dallas Renegades so far this season. Dungey is buried on the depth chart and there doesn’t appear to be a clear path to the starting gig.
Landry Jones is one of the faces of the XFL league as a whole. He’s currently slotted as the starting quarterback for the Renegades but he underwent an MRI earlier this week and apparently he reaggravated his left knee injury from training camp and will be on the shelf for the next two weeks.
The last time Jones was injured the team opted to roll with Philip Nelson instead of Dungey, so the expectation is they’ll make the same decision later this week at home vs the New York Guardians.
Since Dungey’s path to playing time is currently unclear, we decided to ask an XFL expert what the trade market could look like.
Alex Marinoni of XFL Gameday on the Game Plus Network joined Boy Green on the radio in Syracuse this week to share his thoughts:
"“Making a trade in the XFL works exactly the same way as it does in the NFL. There are two XFL teams that would be perfect fits for Eric Dungey. The New York Guardians and the Tampa Bay Vipers would be ideal landing spots. The Vipers just had Quinton Flowers step away from the team for personal reasons (he has since returned), but the team’s long-term answer isn’t currently on the roster right now. Eric Dungey would fit on that team perfectly. The other team that makes a ton of sense is the New York Guardians. They have struggled with quarterback issues Both of these teams have uncertainty at the position and they should be looking into the possibility of bringing Dungey in via trade.”"
Both the Guardians (2-2) and the Vipers (1-3) are in third and fourth place respectively in the XFL East.
A return to New York would make a ton of sense both on the field (Dungey is a talented dual-threat quarterback) and off the field (jersey sales, hometown kid played college locally). While the Vipers would also present a unique opportunity for Eric Dungey to strut his stuff.
