Two former Syracuse football stars have received an NFL opportunity with the Cleveland Browns. Here are all the details and what that means.

The 2018 Syracuse football squad was a special team that went 10-3 for the first time since 2001. Some of the biggest stars from that team moved on to NFL opportunities in the spring.

After going unselected, former Orange quarterback Eric Dungey signed a deal with the New York Giants.

Dungey was selective during this process and sifted through multiple NFL offers before deciding big blue was the right choice.

Unfortunately, Eric’s injury history haunted him in the pros and forced him to miss critical time with the Giants during the spring and he was waived ahead of training camp.

Dungey had a career year in passing (2,868 yards), rushing (754 yards) and finished his Syracuse career with 93 total touchdowns. Eric was one of the most dominant dual-threat quarterbacks in college football history.

When the Giants signed him, they didn’t just bring him in as a quarterback, they brought him in as a utility player. A position that became a thing thanks to Taysom Hill with the New Orleans Saints.

Also for the first time in Eric’s career, he even flirted with the tight end position for the Giants.

While his star wideout Jamal Custis had a career-year in 2018 which ended up being perfect timing ahead of the NFL Draft.

After being invisible for the first three years of his collegiate career due to injuries and lack of opportunities, Custis exploded as a fifth-year senior.

"2018: 51 receptions for 906 yards and six touchdowns."

Jamal is a big-bodied (6-foot-5, 215 pounds) receiver who brings size, deceptive speed, and a legitimate red-zone weapon to the table.

Sadly he wasn’t picked either, but quickly signed a free-agent deal with the Kansas City Chiefs that paid him handsomely.

"Per ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Custis received over $100,000 in guarantees which is the highest amount for any undrafted wide receiver in the last two years."

Despite the financial investment and some wow plays throughout training camp, Custis was waived ahead of the final roster cutdown.

Since both players were released, we haven’t heard much from either camp in terms of NFL interest, until now.

NFL Insider Aaron Wilson revealed on Twitter that the Cleveland Browns recently worked out both former Syracuse stars.

On top of the Browns workout, Jamal Custis also worked out for the Oakland Raiders earlier this week.

Dungey has returned to the Syracuse area to finish up getting his degree. Eric also has an XFL opportunity sitting in his lap, but he’s been adamant that his sole focus is the NFL. While Jamal Custis has been waiting patiently for his next NFL opportunity.

While it doesn’t appear that these workouts have led to NFL contracts (at least yet), just getting into an NFL workout is phenomenal news for their futures.
