Syracuse Football: Majority of new incoming recruits officially enroll
The latest recruiting class for the Syracuse football squad is almost entirely on campus. Here’s the full list and what they can provide the Orange in 2019.
Some fresh meat has officially enrolled in the summer session for the Syracuse football squad. 13 players in total, five on offense, seven on defense, and one on special teams.
Here’s the full list of newcomers that are enrolled and a little bit more about what they can provide the Orange in 2019:
- QB, Drew Gunther
- Syracuse has struggled strangely in one particular area: recruiting quarterbacks. While Dino Babers did snag Tommy DeVito who many people assume will be a star in 2019, no one else has been titillated to join the cause. Gunther is a preferred walk-on and can provide some depth.
- FB, Kevon Darton
- The fullback position is one of the most underappreciated in all of college football. But another preferred walk-on may be the meal ticket to ending an embarrassing drought. Syracuse hasn’t had a 1,000-yard rusher since 2012 (Jerome Smith), perhaps 2019 can finally be the year where all the stars align.
- OT, Ryan Alexander
- Last year, Koda Martin was a plug and play offensive tackle from Texas A&M. He was an absolute blessing for the Orange in 2018 and they’re hoping another grad-transfer can provide a similar spark in Ryan Alexander. There are legitimate concerns about playing at a lower level and how that’ll translate, but Ryan is a stud.
- WR, Nate Wellington
- Another preferred walk-on who is looking for a miracle in camp ahead of the season opener in August. Nate actually lives around several current Syracuse football coaches, small world huh?
- TE, Luke Benson
- Syracuse just lost an important piece last year in Ravian Pierce. While his numbers won’t overwhelm you, he had a strong impact on the team. Syracuse is looking for the next great tight end prospect but no one has stepped up so far. Benson could be THAT guy for SU in 2019.
Defense
- DL, Jason Munoz
- Not only did Syracuse snag an all-star caliber player, but they also took him from an ACC conference rival in Miami. After some coaching changes with the U, Jason was ready to jump ship and join the Orange!
- DL, Steve Linton
- Steve had some big-time offers, but the lanky defensive stud said Syracuse was the best fit. While the deck is stacked heading into 2019 with Kendall Coleman and Alton Robinson, they both will be gone next year, Linton and Munoz could be THE guys in 2020.
- DL, Joe Rondi
- Joe was one of the first players to commit to Syracuse and now the pairing is official, per the University. SU really added to the cupboard over the last few years, but Joe will find a role on this squad.
- LB, Geoff Cantin-Arku
- We can’t say enough good things about his tape and what he can provide Syracuse on defense. He’s a ferocious athletic hitman who will bring some sizzle and pop to the Orange defense.
- DB, Aman Greenwood
- His nickname is “Smurf” and he’s listed at 6-foot flat and 180 pounds. What he lacks in size, he makes up for in heart. Here’s hoping the nicknames continue at Syracuse.
- DB, Cornelius Nunn
- SU’s secondary is locked and loaded in 2019, but they can get even better. One of the highest-rated recruits out of the latest recruiting class should make SU’s secondary elite.
- DB, Garrett Williams
- Hailing from North Carolina, Garrett Williams is hoping to make the team and contribute. As long as he does stuff like that he should be fine.
- LS, Michael Midkiff
- Another walk-on who will provide depth at one of the game’s overlooked positions in football.
