Syracuse Football: Orange in Alliance of American Football, Week 4 recap
The Alliance of American Football has just wrapped up Week 4. Here’s how all the former Syracuse football stars did on and off the field.
"“In the 16 games played, the average margin of victory has been 10.9 points. Eight games have been decided by eight points or less (one possession) and five by three points or fewer. All eight of those one-possession losses have come in the last three weeks following an opening weekend that had an average margin of victory of 21.3. The average is 7.4 from Week 2 through Week 4,” per Howard Balzer of AAF.com."
In other words, we’re getting some great football on the field and a big reason for that is all the former Syracuse football players who are dishing it out on the field and in the front offices for the Alliance of American Football.
Amba Etta-Tawo, WR, Birmingham Iron
- The Iron was one of two undefeated teams heading into Week 4, but that’s no longer the case after losing a nailbiter 12-11 to the San Antonio Commanders. Sadly Etta-Tawo has battled injuries since Week 1 and has yet to make his return to the football field.
Ervin Philips, WR, Atlanta Legends
- Philips was targeted three times and hauled in two receptions for 28 yards. According to the box score after the game, the Atlanta Legends used a two-receiver set for depth chart which means Erv came off the bench for this game after starting the past couple.
Kevin Coyle, HC, Atlanta Legends
- While on the other side of the coin the Atlanta Legends got their first dub of the season by defeating the Arizona Hotshots, 14-11. Sadly the Legends are in the Eastern Conference and are three games back of the Orlando Apollos (4-0). If the Legends were in the Western Conference, they’d only be one game back of first place.
Andrew Tiller, OL, Orlando Apollos
- And then there was one: the Orlando Apollos are the lone undefeated team remaining in the Alliance of American Football after four weeks of play. Andrew Tiller has led the offensive line to the most dominant offense in the entire AAF (scoring 118 points, the next closest team has 34 fewer points).
Jordan Martin, DB, San Diego Fleet
- The starting free safety for the Fleet, Jordan Martin combined for six tackles which were the second most on the entire team. The Fleet lost a close one: 26-23 that came to the bitter end vs the Memphis Express.
Dave Boller, GM, San Diego Fleet
- The Fleet overall are 2-2 on the season after four weeks of play, but sometimes you have to look beyond that. Their two losses have been close losses and easily could’ve gone the other way. Despite that, the Fleet is still in a tie for first place in the Western Conference standings with the Arizona Hotshots and the San Antonio Commanders.
Daryl ‘Moose’ Johnston, GM, San Antonio Commanders
- Speaking of the Commanders, what a win for this team over the previously undefeated Birmingham Iron 12-11 in Week 4. San Antonio, by the way, is tied for first place in the Western Conference Standings.
