Before you enjoy Super Bowl Sunday with your friends and family, it’s time to enjoy the top relevant Syracuse football Super Bowl superlatives.

It’s one of the greatest holidays of the entire calendar, of course I’m talking about Super Bowl Sunday! While there may not be any Syracuse football players in the big game this season, that doesn’t mean Orange fans can’t enjoy this special day.

We decided to take a look through history at some of the most interesting Super Bowl superlatives that are related to things involving the Syracuse football team!

Here are some of the former coaches and assistants at Syracuse who have won Super Bowl championships:

  • Tom Coughlin
    • Believe it or not, Tom Coughlin has won three world championships. Two of them as the head coach of the New York Giants when he took out the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 42 (17-14) and Super Bowl 46 (21-17), but also few people know he also won another Super Bowl as an assistant with the Giants in Super Bowl 25 (20-19) over the Buffalo Bills. Wide right? Sorry too soon Bills fans, my apologies.
    • Coughlin spent a ton of time at Syracuse University both as a player and a coach:
      • Played running back (1965-67)
        • Was teammates with Orange legends Larry Csonka and Floyd Little. But Coughlin wasn’t just a water boy, he held his own. In 1967, he set the single season receiving record for the Orange, per the Syracuse Football Media Guide.
      • Syracuse graduate assistant (1969)
      • Quarterbacks coach (1974-75)
      • Offensive coordinator (1976-80)
        • Matt Patricia
          • The architect of several New England Patriots championship defenses has roots right here in New York. Matt was born in Sherrill, New York and of course was a graduate assistant at Syracuse (2001-03) under Paul Pasqualoni (who is now his defensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions) funny how life works.
          • Patricia has three Super Bowl rings from his time with the Patriots:
            • Super Bowl 39 (24-21) over the Philadelphia Eagles led by guess who former Syracuse football quarterback Donovan McNabb.
            • Super Bowl 49 (28-24) over the Seattle Seahawks.
            • Super Bowl 51 (34-28) over the Atlanta Falcons. The Patriots overcame a 28-3 deficit to complete the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history.
          • Ivan Fears
            • Who? Ivan Fears was a long-time Syracuse assistant, specifically working with the wide receivers for a decade from 1980-90.
            • Fears has been with the Patriots since 1999 as a wide receiver coach then to his current position as the running backs coach since 2002.
            • In that time he has won an astonishing five Super Bowl championships and will be going for his sixth vs the LA Rams in Super Bowl 53.
            • Quite an impressive list of coaches, but what about the players? We take a deep dive in our next slide about all the Orange players who have appeared and won a Super Bowl ring.
