This isn’t the usual 2018 get for the Syracuse football team. Instead they added an elite pass rusher who can help out this season. ITLH has more.

Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers pulled the rabbit out of the hat and added a big time recruit with the addition of 3-star JUCO defensive end Alton Robinson.

The former Texas A&M DE, was kicked out of school due to stealing his girlfriends cell phone. All charges were later dropped to a misdemeanor. Robinson was a 4-star prospect according to ESPN out of high school, with offers from the likes of Baylor, Michigan, Houston, among others.

Babers is taking a big gamble on Robinson, but it’s worth it. Last season, Robinson was third in sacks in all of the Junior College ranks, racking up 14 of them. Expect to see Robinson on the field from day one, at least on third down, passing-rushing situations.

Let’s break down his tape:

The first play I want to look at occurs at the :20 mark. Robinson is lined up on the edge and the opposing team calls a sweep run play to his side of the defense. The Texas native is relentless in his pursuit of the ball, although he is briefly double-teamed, he fights off that and shows very

impressive speed for a 245-pound DE, tracking down the running back from behind and limiting the damage. Last season, Syracuse lacked defensive players who were fast sideline to sideline.

At the 1:15 mark, Robinson shows off some of his pass-rushing skills. He uses a speed rush to get around the tackle, and once the running back picks him up in pass protection, he bull rushes through him. Robinson then makes a good fundamental tackle dropping the quarterback and recording the sack.

That first step is key.

Robinson has a very quick step for a guy who weighs 245-pounds. At the 2:31 mark, he shows this firing off the ball. The tackle assigned to blocking the former Texas A&M commit, completely whiffs and Robinson lays a great, clean hit on the quarterback who just barely got the ball off in time.

Perhaps the most impressive play that Robinson has occurs at the 2:46 mark. He bull-rushes the tackle assigned to blocking him, looking like a man amongst boys. Robinson disrupts the pocket, flushing the quarterback out, forcing him to make a throw on the run that is picked off. He also lays a mean hit on the quarterback to finish this play.

Robinson has a mean streak to him when playing the game. He should contribute right away on this Syracuse team, if not a starter, he will be used in pass-rushing situations. Robinson is not like most JUCO transfer’s either, he has three years of eligibility left, instead of two. A huge plus for Orange.
