Some encouraging news on the Syracuse basketball recruiting front, as Oshae Brissett is the Canadian High School Player of the Year for 2016-17.

Fans of the Syracuse basketball squad often like to complain about the dearth of highly rated recruits committing to don an Orange uniform for head coach Jim Boeheim and his staff.

Whether or not such whining has any merit, here’s a dose of positive juice for ‘Cuse Nation: a member of the 2017 class is now the best high-school stud north of the U.S. border.

Four-star forward Oshae Brissett, who attends Athlete Institute Prep in Mono, Ontario, earlier this week received the Canadian High School Player of the Year award for the 2016-17 campaign, says a tweet from BioSteel All CDN.

While the tweet notes that the BioSteel All CDN selection committee bestowed this tremendous recognition upon Brissett, whose hometown is in Mississauga, Ontario.

While on April 10, Brissett and his teammate at Athlete Institute Prep, point guard Howard Washington, participated in BioSteel, a Canadian all-star contest, along with 22 other players. Brissett landed his honor at this event, which is in its third year.

We should note here that Washington, a Buffalo, N.Y., native, recently revealed he, like Brissett,

will suit up for the ‘Cuse this coming fall. Washington is listed as either a three- or four-star prospect, depending on the recruiting service.

While currently, 247Sports pegs the 6-6 Brissett at 54th overall. Which is a lot higher than most other recruiting Web sites. The 247Sports Composite, for example, slots him at 143rd. The ESPN 100 for 2017 doesn’t include Brissett, although he’s given a scout grade of 84 by ESPN.com.

While last November, Syracuse saw Brissett become the first to commit for the 2017-18 stanza, followed by four-star power forward/center Bourama Sidibe soon thereafter, and then Washington.

And, as we’ve documented at ITLH, Boeheim & Co. aren’t done. Four-star wing Jordan Tucker is in the mix. Eric Ayala, a 2018 four-star point guard, may reclassify to 2017. While I’ve read conflicting reports about whether 2017 four-star point guard Tremont Waters, who has received a release from his Georgetown commitment, may consider SU.

Regardless, with Brissett, Sidibe and Washington in tow, if we could snag Tucker and either Ayala or Waters, the outlook for next season will undoubtedly brighten.

I get it. JB and his assistants have lost out on a bevy of top-flight targets in recent months. So what. The same can get said for a lot of powerhouse programs. We aren’t Duke, Kansas, Kentucky or North Carolina as it pertains to recruiting.

But I, for one, believe that some talented – and loyal – guys are headed to CNY in the near future. Led by Brissett, the premier player in all of Canada. That’s pretty fantastic. A hearty congratulations to you, Oshae!
